Glad they salvaged some meat. I do see this as a way for poachers to abuse the system though I hope it doesn't play out as so.

The potential n for abuse is high in my opinion, especially in an area like packwood.

They would make a fortune.

I know the guys that salvaged it glad to see there freezer full great people and will give you the shirt off there back in a heart beat.

There are other places where salvaging roadkill is legal (Colorado for one) that have herds as good as the Packwood area and I have not heard of the abuse so many worry about.  There are a lot more people on the roads to see than in the woods.

Also how many of you have hit an elk?  Even with a good brush guard there is likely to be some serious damage that would outweigh the meat gained.

I just don't think it is going to be the issue so many think.

Is there a charge for those permits?

The state will probably make them a new special draw category. Antlerless, antlered, and quality for the really big ones

I thought the original law did not allow the retention of the horns. I could be wrong.  Doesn't matter either way as long as they are consistent.

I agree, not necessarily about Packwood though.  Other states seem to have more accountability in that an LEO has to tag it before it can be taken home.

People die hitting animals all the time. There is s memorial in front of my dad's house in Mazama from where someone hit a little doe whitetail. Quite the risk to abuse the system in my opinion.

You don't think a bunch of toothless hillbillys will take their beat up delapitated trucks out run over deer and elk on purpose do ya will they keep track of the ones who get salvage permits? Cause I am betting if you 20 salvage permits something hinky is probably up??

Probably because they swerved to try to miss it.  A pickup with a heavy duty bumper, accelerating straight at a deer, nobodys gonna die.  I highly doubt it would be a widespread practice, but I could see it happening, i guess some clown was running over turkeys around here to pick them up.  Anyway, i highly doubt anybody would hit an elk on purpose.  Maybe deer, but definitely not elk.

It seems to me that at any "trophy" road kill salvage it would be wise to have a LEO come just to support the idea that everything is on the up and up.

I remember a cop hitting an elk near Packwood awhile back.  He and the elk both died.  If you want to hit a critter you better be willing to pay the price.

My f350 is way too nice to intentionally hit something.  But glad they were able to salvage even if they werent the original party who hit it.  Might be a situation where the individual is a vegetarian or isnt skilled too.  No sense still letting it go to waste.  Anyone should be able to salvage provided original person doesnt want it.  Last year I seen a huge doe get hit... driver slowed down a lil but just kept driving.  Doe stumbled 15yrds then expired. Was sooo tempted to salvage but didnt cause was driving work truck with huge company logo    Glad WA State finally did something right for us meat eaters.
