Looks like they will still be discounting 2nd elk tags. $299 instead of $401. Wow!!

I drew WA muzzy cow so skipping Idaho elk this year! Too many tags & not enough freezers!

Wow.

OK, supply & demand, I understand all of that.  But I doubt this will continue next year.  The leftover 2nd tags were primarily purchased by residents, and I just don't see them paying full freight for a deer tag.  $300 for a 2nd deer tag, when your 1st tag was 1/10th of that?  Not in Idaho.  My humble opinion, that's all.  Let's see how this shakes out in 2017.

So....for 850$ I can kill 2 elk, in two different zones or the same, with multiple weapons, from September-December, with success rates near 20%.

Or, Washington for 12 days with 1 weapon, 1 side of the mountains, with success rates around 5% for 50$.....

Yup. Which makes an elk tag the same price as a deer tag. Which seems weird :chuckle:. I think they may be getting a little cocky. It seems like just last year they were practically begging for non resident hunters.

It's still the cheapest deer tag with some of the best trophy potential in North America people.  Let's not get too worked up :chuckle:

Oh, I'm not worked up. I actually agree with you. I just think this might back fire a little on them. Especially with the publicity they've been getting.

I really wanted to buy a second deer tag this year, if they were discounted.  I wish they would just keep the elk tags full price and discount the deer tags.  The price of the elk tag is appealing and I don't think I would have a hard time filling it, but I feel I am just being greedy if I take 2 elk in a year.  Maybe if I have a few more kids I will do that, but 1 a year is perfect right now.  Or maybe I will find someone who needs meat and get one for them :)

If MT would just play the script and continue to be the money hungry monster they are, and give out an insane amount of tags otc like they had been, then this would be a non issue.  All these folks that didn't get their MT tag are looking to Idaho for their deer fix.  Boy are they gonna be surprised when they find out idaho isn't near as flat as eastern MT  :chuckle:

This throws a wrench in it. I was going to for sure buy a second tag if they were discounted. Now I'm not so sure. Might wait and fill the first one see what happens

Can you buy a tag during the season in Idaho? I might have the same plan...

Ya you can if they are still available that's the kicker. I have a feeling they will be. When your already over there and you fill a tag the last thing I wanna do is pack up and go home or quit hunting.

We will have a good idea of whether or not they'll be any left as the time draws near. Is there any way to see if/when they all sold out last year?

Two years ago you could, but last season you had to buy them by the 1st of September.  It looks like its the same this year.

I don't think they have sold out on either deer or elk in a long time.  I know a few elk zones sell out every year but that's about it.  I could be wrong though as I don't pay that close of attention.  I buy my tags relatively early and move on with life.

Elk could in areas with capped OTC tags.  I have never heard of the Panhandle selling out though.  Deer will not, they do not have a cap on deer tags

Correction, there is not a cap by unit like elk tags, but in total there is.  I don't think you will have an issue though.  Even when they were discounted you could still get them with ease.

Q. How many tags are there?

A. Supplies are limited to the available nonresident tag quota [LINK], which is 12,815 for elk and 15,500 for deer.

If I was a betting man I'd say they would have made more money by selling more tags if they'd ran the discount again because now there isn't really any reason to buy a second tag before you fill the first one unless you're in an area that you can't get to a store.
