I spoke with the WDFW last Tuesday and he told me that at that point about half of the deer permits had been purchased and virtually all of the elk permits had been purchased and he was anticipating for all of the elk to have been bought by the 31st.

I don't think that's it.  They make $160ish bucks for each MS tag they sell - and they have little/no time invested to put them out there for sale.  IMO They will sell every one of those tags if they possibly can; money is money and people are willing to buy the tags.  The only way I see them not being available is if there are ten (or very few) available, in which case, they'd create negative feelings in their patrons by raising hopes for available tags, then getting sold out in the first 20 seconds.

What really raises my eyebrows about the whole thing is that I cannot figure out how the applicants for this tag went from 8,500 two years ago (and before) to 13,000 plus for the last two years.  It makes little sense when hunter numbers keep declining and harvest rates have remained similar from year to year.   :dunno:

Solution: Make everyone pay up when they apply, then if they don't draw they get a refund. You can't apply for special permit hunts without buying the tag first why should this be different?!

They can't even run a draw correctly what's the chances that they can refund money correctly...  Sounds like a nightmare.

I talked to the WDFW yesterday. They will send out the info next week, around mid-week, on how many tags are left and when/where/how you can get them.

Last year they sent a email out a little over a week from when they were going to be on sale, notifying of how many of each tag are available and what not about it. I'm assuming the same will be done this year. And I have yet to receive a email so still waiting. Hopefully it's soon.

A good friend of mine texted me yesterday that he was awarded a multi-season elk permit on a second draw. :dunno:

I'm really hoping they put the deer tags on leftover.

I am sure that saves them a bunch of hassle at the stores.

When I went to try to get a leftover elk tag last year there were still 3200 deer tags left. I'm sure it will be a similar situation this year. I got emails well after the leftovers went on sale that they were still available. I doubt they sold all the deer tags last year.

Mystery solved. Hunter Education instructors can apply for a separate pool of multi-season permits. They had a few unclaimed ones and he was offered one of them.
