FOC question
« on: July 26, 2016, 07:45:02 PM »
With 100 grain tips Im at 14.03%. With 125s, Im at 15.3%. Im shooting a 350 spine carbon express maxima at 28 1/2" at 62#. I think my arrow might be a little stiff with the 100s, but I like the 14% FOC. Is 15.3% to much? Am I over thinking this?

You must have some heavy inserts!

Or some REALLY light fletching.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I have 4 fletch blazers :dunno: Maybe I didn't figure it out right :dunno: My arrow length is 28.5" and my balance point was at 18.25" with 100s, and 18.63" with 125s. So, minus 14.25" from 18.25"=4, multiply by 100=400, divide by 28.5"=14.03% .....right?

Don't forget you need to add the length of point.

Ok, so I figured out where I went wrong. I burned an inch when I measured to my balance point so my 18.25" is really 17.25" :chuckle:. Man its hard being a dumb ass sometime :bash: Looks like the 125s will put me at 11.84%. I think that should work.

I'm at about 21% and they fly great.

If I were shooting my Maxima shafts at that length with factory inserts...I would be shooting a 125 grain head.  It is a great set-up!  One of my all time favorites

I have found there are certain thresholds in archery that really make a difference. 55# draw weight, 12% FOC, 350 grain arrow...just to name a few.  But once you break that barrier the returns don't necessarily increase exponentially.   So while there are concerns about reaching numbers we can over think our equipment, for North American game, rather easily.

IMO - The simple math is normally more than effective.  So I'll take an arrow with point that measures 28.5" and mark the mid point (14.25).  Then 28.5 x .12 = 3.42" so I make another mark forward of the center mark by 3.42".  If my arrow balances at that mark or forward of that mark...I'm good.  More than 12% is just minutia in my mind unless I'm questionable on fletching or excessive on broadhead surface.

Our efforts are often better focused toward accuracy, repeatability and choosing the right shot than on the trivial details within the minutia.  Even if those details can, at times, be fun!

I'm guessing you get fingered the 24.25 as it should be 14.25.

I'm guessing you fat fingered the "get" as it should be "fat". :chuckle:

Unless you meant "got" instead of "get" and we'll just leave that for another thread.
