Finally got my mount done (mostly)
« on: July 28, 2016, 08:36:31 AM »
I got my first deer last fall and have had the antlers sitting around with a shed antler I found during the hunt. They've been a coffee table centerpiece and I finally got around to making my plaque and mounting them up. I still need to cover the screw heads up, but it's 95% finished as it is.

Looks good.  I do similar mounts for people with the state cut out.  I also put a decorative pin where it was killed.  Have you considered covering the screws/skull portion with deer hide?  Makes a nice touch.

Great first buck and mount.

Thank you.

Yes, the screws will get covered up with some form of white drywall putty or paint. The hide is a good idea too, maybe I'll add that after this years season (fingers crossed). Just haven't had a chance to hit the hardware store yet for that last 5% to get it finished

Let me know if you need some hide, I have tons.  I'm close by too.

I have used modelling clay to shape the form around the skull piece with good results.

Nice one for your first deer. I use expandable foam for base material easy to sand down. I have also used tan hide to cover it up. Most of the time I skin out the head ,put the skin in a pickle bath of salt and alum. They last forever.
