Wool blankets vs sleeping bags in wall tent?
« on: July 29, 2016, 09:09:15 AM »
So I'm at a bit of a crossroad right now, I need to either buy a decent sleeping bag to use with my cots in my new tent, or possibly skip the bag, and go with a wool blanket from Pendleton or Hudson bay.

I've never loved bags, annd only own a old Woolrich down mummy bag, and some cheaper warm weather bags now.

Will I regret going with a wool blanket instead of a bag? Weight is no concern, and I figure with a wood stove burning, I probably won't need a super low rated bag, but this is my first foray into a hot tent, so maybe I'm not thinking along the right path.

If I do go with a bag, it'll be a rectangular, canvas and flannel job.

Thanks for any input!

I go with a bag, It can still get pretty chilly in our tent in the early morning hours. I also have 3in of memory foam on my cot and put a cheap bag down under my primary bag as it is easy to get cold on the bottom side. Heat rising and all.

I've always slept better with blankets and quilts. I don't sleep in my bed in a bag. I try to get the best rest I can. Worked fine for me when I was packing and guiding.  Even in Nov at 8000ft.

:) I just find the bag easier to deal with, keeping it on the cot etc.

I prefer blankets.  I put some egg foam then an old rectangular bag on top of that to be the mattress.  If you roll around a lot and side sleep, a bag gets uncomfortable.

This is my major problem, moving around in a bag drives me nuts. Which is what lead me to wanting to go to blankets, that and usually keep a leg out of the covers when I sleep to some degree, which means I usually keep m y bag unzipped anyhow.

Maybe I need both...

I have a 3inch pad, with a wool blanket over that if needed and I open my sleeping bag and lay that over me..With a wood stove I have always ended up just laying on my bag most the time..better have what you might need and not use it,than go with out

That's a good point, I've got a decent down mummy bag right now, I just can't stand sleeping in it cause I get claustrophobic to a degree, maybe I'll invest in a better cot pad, and wool blanket, and just pack that bag, and my super old Coleman canvas bag with me just in case I need more.
I think between those, the Woodstove, a buddy heater and thermals, I should be good in Anny weather that's cold.

Now then, I really like the Pendleton blankets, and the fact I can go to Pendleton and pick one up right from the factory, but should I put the "local" thing out of the way and look at Hudson or Woolrich for a nice blanket?

You could also try a down quilt, which is open sided.  Enlightened equipment is what many have gravitated toward that face the dilemma you are facing.  More for backpacking than wall tent, but I could see using it for the same reason.

On a cot, I use a double wide sleeping bag. Blankets do not work well for me on cots, I move to often and they are to hard to keep on me and the cot.
I do use another sleeping bag on top of my 2" pad that goes in my cot on really cold nights.
I use to use a queen size blowup mattress with a down comforter. That was totally comfortable, but left little room to work around in the tent.

Take it from a old guy.

I have tent camped my entire life. Never had a wood stove until the past couple years. Back when the seasons were in the cold times. I tried blankets for years froze.

$165.00 and I will solve your problem for life.
Go where ever you want and buy the biggest roomiest sleeping bag you can find with flannel lining. On the way home stop in a rite aid and buy yourself a $15.00 hot water bottle.

Put a pad under your bag to block cold air under the cot. Lay your bag out. About 1 hour before bed boil a pot of water. put it in the water bottle. I use plyers to hold the bottle while filling. Wrap in old shirt or pillow case put in the bottom of your bag.

You will be warm all night.  :IBCOOL:

Us old guys need to stay warm, LOL

I also put my clothes for the next day in the bottom Sleeping bag so they are toasty on the cold mornings.
On really cold nights I sleep with either a scull cap or dew rag on. plus they help from getting your pillow grungy.

I've thought about cutting my down bag up and making a quilt actually, especially for the few times i decide a hammock hang is a good idea!

Too bad Cabelas stopped offering the Magnum 44 bag.  I have one and once discovered I was more comfortable in it on my cot than my down on the king bed at home.
