Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter 44 mag. I shot him in the neck with a 300 grain Hornady XTP pushed by 19 grains of H110.

Many of blues have been campfire meals with the Slabside Competition shooting sub-sonics during the high hunt. Been several years since I've tried with a pistol, but the last was with the Taurus Tracker .17hmm revolver. No margin for error with the v-max bullets though.

I'm rather looking forward to this season. Opener is on a Thursday, and I'll be out there bringing law 'n order to the beasties!

Got this one with a mix of .300 WM and Browning Buckmark pistol.  Winged it out of a tree at about 50 yards with my .300.  When it started to take off running my BIL handed me his pistol and the chase ensued.  Finally got it cornered and was able to finish it off with the .22.  Didn't get a pic with the pistol, but got this one on the hike back out after the morning elk hunt.

I usually just take the head off with my 300 win mag.
I always wanted to try some bird shot with my XD .40 cal though.

As it turns out, this may be an opportunity-laden opener for me.
Ruger is introducing the Mark IV, a full upgrade of the famous .22 pistol and they're sending one for a T&E for a magazine article. As I did with the Ruger American .22 rifle a few years ago, I may get to take the first game with this pistol.
I'll certainly be writing about it.

What exactly are the restrictions with regards to hunting grouse with a handgun?

Grouse can't be hunted with a .24 or larger caliber/ shotgun slug during modern deer/elk unless you have a tag for one of those species. That's the only restriction I know of and I remember it is a pain to find in the regs but I can't remember what page its on without pulling out the regs.

So I can use my .380 pistol since it's open season for grouse, but isn't yet modern deer/elk season? I tried finding this in the books and couldn't find anything definitive.

pg 21 in the migratory and upland pamphlet

Here is the wording copied from page 21:

Forest Grouse
Forest grouse may not be killed
with any rifle or handgun 24 caliber
or larger, or shotgun containing
slugs or buckshot, during modern
firearm deer or elk seasons unless
appropriate deer or elk tags are in
the hunter's possession.
Forest grouse may be taken with
shotguns as well as firearms
smaller than 24 caliber during the
entire grouse hunting season
.

So you can use a .380 pistol as long as it isn't modern firearm deer or elk season? And I can use my .308 rifle to hunt grouse even if it is modern firearm season as long as I have a deer tag as well?
