I made the decision to go to a hand held release for hunting this year back in May. What I had planned on doing was moving to thumb release but I got a good deal on a hinge and I've been shooting it for a few months. I got a thumb release a few weeks back and after practicing with it a few times, it just doesn't feel natural. Now I'm in the position that I had never planned on, I'm going to go hunting with the release I have the most confidence in but it's a style I've always told myself I'd never use for hunting.

So go ahead and tell me how bad of an idea it is and when I get done elk hunting next month, I'll let you all know if I blew it by going the hinge route.

I won't judge someone's equipment choice, I know a guy who has killed plenty of elk and deer with a hinge.

That said I personally wouldn't use one for hunting. (Mostly because I like to force the shot when hunting).

I've bowhunted with a Tru-Ball pure back tension, successfully, for years.

It works just fine.  I actually think it makes for better shots, because it forces you to take your time.  No snap shots so to speak.  You can shoot fast if needed however.

I have hunted many years with thumb and back tension releases. With excellent luck. Pretty much just use a thumb release now days but there is nothing wrong with hunting with a tension release. If you are prone to getting amped up before a shot then I don't recommend a tension release for hunting. To easy for things to go haywire with a thumb release you can still get away with a weird draw twitching around

If I were shooting a typical back tension release I wouldn't be able to hunt with it because of that. Thankfully the Honey releases from Carter have safeties. My nerves will only matter those few seconds at full draw after I take the safety off and I am send my arrow down range.
