Rimrock Modern Any Bull
« on: August 04, 2016, 12:39:58 PM »
I have a Rimrock modern firearm bull tag this year and have gotten a couple scouting trips in so far.  Here are some pictures for the month of July.

Moultrie Trace cameras, I picked them up for $50 each last summer.  They seem to work good enough.

My season has ended with meet for the freezer. Opening day found me hiking about 15 miles, seeing a few cows and busting a herd in the thick stuff. Having never hunted here, I realized that without prior knowledge of the unit, any bull that found itself in my crosshairs would be good enough for me. On the second day of season, I started at daylight hiking up through the steep stuff, with some heavy timber and some small opening here and there. After about 3/4 of a mile and 800 vertical feet I noticed a funny color on the hill above me through some small trees. It was a bull, so I immediately put 2 shots through the ribs and he changed direction then tipped over. I got my Dad on the radio and he was able to hike up to where I was and snap some pictures and help with getting the elk back to the truck. The place he tipped over made for some great pictures.

Nice bull!  Kind of a unique fella. 2x3, but he qualifies as a spike in the regular spike units. I'd like to see him Saturday am!

Nice bull! Can't beat a filled tag, and meat in the freezer! Great hunt with the scouting before hand and a notched tag! That's a "Trophy" in my book.

Yep.  The one side doesn't since it has a branch up top.  Assuming that the left side doesn't have a branch more than 4 inches above the base, then it would qualify as a spike per WA state law.

interesting, I'm not up to speed on the elk restrictions like that, I would have passed him in a spike unit.  has anyone ever shot a bull that had a branch below the 4 point mark or a bull that broke off his antler like a 6x1 or anything like that. and if so did you get questioned?  by the way, congrats on the harvest. any bull is a good bull

Buddy 6-7 years ago shot a 1×6 . Left side was 23" long spike  right side was a decent 6. Warden stopped us ( to check for any bull tag ) saw the bull , laughed and said have a good day.
O.P nice bull in a tough unit
