Mentored Pheasant "Hunt" More Results!
« on: August 05, 2016, 12:13:18 AM »
I haven't done this in a few years, because I haven't had a reliable dog.  Well, Jasmine is ready, so I am offering to take a youngster 15 years old or younger out for planted pheasant.  I will supply the birds and the bird dog.  You will need a parent or guardian, shotgun, ammo, safety vest, transportation, and appropriate attire.  I also require that you have completed Hunter Education.

This is Bob33's son Matthew.

Bob, I can't believe it has been five years already!

Great photo Larry.  Even better offer. Hope you get some takers.

Great offer, where will the hunt take place?

I use the WDFW pheasant release sites, so I can go where I'm needed.  Within reason.  :chuckle:

That's a very generous offer, Larry. Taking my son out was a real catalyst for him becoming a hunter.

Us fathers with young ones are sure thankful for those one here that support our kids. Great offer. Thank you!

Here's the results of my hunt with Tristan.  Tristan was only able to get a couple of BBs in the bird, so Jasmine had to do the rest.  Unfortunately she caught up with the rooster in a creek, so he got soaked.  If you look closely at the picture you can see the rooster's tail coming out of Tristan's vest, and stretching across my belly.  I have a rather ample belly, so you can see just how long the tail is.   :chuckle:

THANK YOU AGAIN OLD DOG.  Tristan was very happy with the hunt, especially when he confirmed he hit the rooster.
Jasmine worked hard for him and had some GREAT points.

We met up at Cottonwood release site in the Wenas. The conditions were difficult, and the birds were running, but Parker managed to get one nice rooster. It was his first rooster, and he was excited! :) During the hunt Jasmine literally ran over a rattlesnake! It was coiled at the bottom of a dry wash, probably warming itself on the rocks. Most time I let Jasmine range a little, but I was keeping her closer because of the tall cover, so I was right behind her when Jasmine ran over what I momentarily thought was a sage brush branch. When she ran over the snake it flipped it up in the air a little. Thankfully when it came down it wasn't coiled anymore, so it didn't have any reach to it's strike, but it tried to get me twice. I asked Parker if he would dispatch it for me, and he was all too willing to oblige. Smart kid. Even though this was another first for him, he knew to blow the head away. It wasn't a big snake, maybe 2 feet long and an inch around, but it was a RATTLESNAKE! I don't think avoidance training would have been a benefit in this case. Jasmine had no idea she had run over a snake, and the snake had no time to give us warning to stay away. I may have to re-consider the "vaccine".

Sorry it took so long to post I have ben busy with school and hunting/traveling. I just wanted to say thanks to Old dog it was my first pheasant hunt, I was able to shoot my first pheasant thanks to a great teacher and his dog named Jasmine it was awesome watching the dog search and smell for the birds. Once Jasmine was able to get on a bird and jumped one up I was able to slam the trigger on my twenty gauge. A pheasant wasn't the only thing Jasmine stumbled upon, when Old Dog noticed her walk right over a rattlesnake he called the dog over and told me I could shoot the snake. Old Dog cut the rattle off and i was so excited I've always wanted to shoot a rattlesnake. I had a great time and now love pheasant hunting. Thanks again to Old Dog for making it possible I hope we get a chance to do it again next year. I will post a couple pics here soon.
