"Be an Otter Spotter"
« on: August 05, 2016, 02:31:32 PM »
Saw this posted at a hatchery a couple days ago.  Woodland Park Zoo is apparently sponsoring a State-wide study on River Otters that has, "... a special focus on river otters as sentinels of ecosystem health along the Green-Duwamish River."  I wonder if it occurred to the authors of the study to ask WDFW for trapper catch data?  Anyway, if trappers reported I bet the people conducting the study would be shocked at how many otters are out there.

You know the old saw about "assume?"

It is dangerous to assume the people at Woodland Zoo even know there are trappers in Washington.  But I agree with you, if they really wanted some good intel, they should ask the trappers of Washington.

If I'm not mistaken, doesnt the trappers yearly report exist so that the state can get an accurate number for small game populations and trends? Seems that info would be far more valuable than just "I think I saw an otter in _____ river"!  :dunno:

I find this funny.  Most people probably don't even know how much use the catch data they can get from trappers can be.

Here is the link for 2015  http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/harvest/2015/trapper.php

You can back up to this page  http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/harvest/

Click on a year then click on trapping, Goes back to about 98 I think. Farther then that you would have to talk to someone in the Department.

Nuisance trapped wildlife is suppose to be kept separate from wildlife trapped for it's pelt (regular season).  They went over that in the NWCO class as it was not happening.

It is supposed to be kept separate when reporting but I am pretty sure it is included in the totals.
