I would also think that it would be illeagle to hunt a big game animal from a snowmobile as well as unethical.  I don't know the exact verbage cause I don't have the regs in front of me but I've read that "pursuing game from vehicle (plane, helicopter, motorcycle, etc.)  is not legal.  Not to mention that irregardless if it was a hunting season or not, chasing elk in "4 ft. of powder just to get a look at them" can exhaust an animal that is already basically starving and worn down.  Now they would become susceptible to cougars, coyotes, poachers, whatever.  Mature bull elk lose a lot of their fat reserves after the rut is over, and only have a limited amount of time to gain some of that back before the winter snow covers much of the feed.  Bad idea!

I'm pretty sure he meant they saw the tracks crossing the road and parked their sleds.  Hard to tell bull or cow in four feet of powder, so a follow-up on foot was needed. When we don't draw the permit, we all know the odds of seeing big bulls at the end of the tracks.  I don't know where you guys got the idea he was running them down.  Lighten up a little!

I agree with hunterofelk, nowhere in his original post does he say he was running the elk down or chasing them with the snowmobile. People need to quit jumping to conclusions so much. Just my  :twocents:

Wow this was shocking to find !!!!!  Obviously we only used the snowmobiles to get to the area we were hunting, same as a truck. It was the hardest hunting I've ever done. We used snowshoes & tracked animals for miles before spotting them. The elk tracks were all made at night & the elk were very far from the road & bedded during the day.  My point was that with the deep snow, poaching of those big bulls would of been easy. Each day I saw huge bulls, all of which were in prime shape. Never saw any elk near the road or from the sled ever. One note : There was trucks with chains, four wheelers & rhinos all hunting up the same road as us. Every single one of those people were road hunting, I was one of the VERY few hunters actually leaving the road & hunting. I just road sleds because I love doing it. Thanks Elkslayer & hunterofelk for giving me the benefit of the doubt. The people that assume I was chasing elk, jumping off my sled & killing bulls have not followed my posts over the last few years in the bowhunting section about how hard I hunt to be successful. Sorry I mentioned sleds, the topic is about poaching. Sorry about the thread jacking. Mike

P.S.  This was the hardest fair chase hunt I've ever done, any of you posting youngsters want to try it this year ?

Thanks for the apology Cascade Sherpa. Buckmaster WA , ( who started this crap ) sent me a pm and kept chastising me about my hunting methods. Some people need to make other people look bad to make their self look better apparently. Hope he grows out of it. Sorry about the thread jacking again, tried to clear it up with pms.  Mike
