2016 Quilomene Sheep Tag

Hey All,

My Buddy finally drew the Quilomene tag with 19 points, looking for any advise to help make this a successful hunt. We will probably use a boat for scouting so am wondering which launch would be best to use, have a 16 ft aluminum boat.

He will be going over to scout this weekend and I will be there the weekend before Sept 15th. What size ram can we expect from this unit, I have gone back in the archives and have read all that is posted.

Again, we appreciate any ideas or thoughts you may have to make this a OIL a success.

we were boating for a week out of cresent bar.  as we hung out at the sand bar across from the Gorge there was 10 sheep up that canyon.

They can be from the dam to the bridge, but mostly around the sand bar/West Bar area. We launched from the public launch at Sunland, but Creacent Bar would work.

We shot a giant at 172", but I wouldn't expect to do as well again. Anything over 160 and you better think about shooting unless you have seen a better ram scouting. I haven't been over looking in that unit for a few years so my advice is dated.

Your best launch will be Sunland.  I used to live there and watch sheep from the deck.  The most animals I'd see while out on the river would be from a house just down from Sunland on the other side of the river all the way up to just below the vertical cliffs just south of West bar. I don't know how to field judge inches in rams but I have seen quite a few 3/4 to to curl rams.

Day one of scouting, hunting Buddy saw several groups of ewes and a total of 4 rams, nothing he would consider as shooters though.

Back on the river at first light tomorrow, then will check out the green dot road system.

What's our odds of seeing any rattlesnakes?

May see a couple. Have you ever been over there on the green dots? If you have quads or an old batter 4x4 would be helpful

Haven't been on the green dots yet, we both have quads and a 99 Ford diesel. Should be good to go.

I see some sheep on the river but not as many as you would think.  Most are up in the canyons.  If I saw a 170 ram I'd shoot it right away.

2nd day of scouting, saw 29 ewes along with a group of 7 rams, one was decent, but am sure there are bigger ones.

More scouting in a couple weeks!

I want to see the pic of the 172".

Also, I would agree with Pope. Anything over 170 shouldn't be passed. I would rely on a boat for the hunting. Have an anchor system set up so you can leave the boat. Give it plenty of room for reservoir fluctuation. Also, I sent you a PM.

Generally the Quilomene sheep are within 2 miles of the Columbia.  Glass what you can from boats and the green dot roads, but pay attention to the green dot maps and go look in the canyons that are not visible from the open roads or the water.  If it's cool temperatures, you can do some great glassing from the Grant Co. side, especially with a top end spotting scope.  Pre-rut, rams are generally toward the north end, from Quilomene bay north to the high bluffs south of Colockum Creek.  I'd shoot any ram over 165" in a heartbeat.
