Just built a Traditions Hawken from kit! Haven't got to go shoot it yet, maybe next weekend!

I am glad to see a few hold overs still hunting tradional .The sport of traditional muzzleloader hunting is fading fast. With the introduction of powder pellets, sabots and in lines our sport is hardly recognizable these days.
I hunt tradional with a T/C Hawken .54. Cap, ball and genuine black powder. I carry a possibles bag and powder horn. I don't wear buckskins.
I would like to see the WDFW establish a primitive category for tradional hunters.

GF2RB, so exposed hammer, full bore bullets, etc.  Help me understand what you mean by "traditional".

Traditional:  My T/C Hawken .54  is exposed hammer using #11 caps. I use genuine black powder. My bullet is a patched round ball. My sights are buckhorn style non-adjustable. My rifle is period correct for the era in which it was originally designed circa. 1820's.

I picked up a .45  GM 1-30 "drop in" for my Renegade about 6 months back.  I was going to swap barrels but think I will look for a complete stock or one with a trashed barrel and maybe brown everything for a more period look.

That Green Mountain 1-30 is a good barrel for conical bullets and sabots. The faster twist will perform better than the stock T/C barrel on your renegade with a 1-48 twist. T/C considers the 1-48 twist as multi-use for all types of bullets.  Now if you want to go traditional and use a patched round ball you will want a slower twist 1-60 or slower  for best accuracy.

I bought the fast twist incase I want to throw some big chunks of conical and still have some k/e at reasonable distance.  450 to 550gr with a MV of 1400 to 1300 ft/sec should be good to as far as I want to shoot with open sight.

I am thinking about getting a "long rifle" just for the fun of it.

.54 cal T/C Renegade...Love traditional muzzleloaders; I think they reflect the original intent / idea  of having a muzzleloader special season in the first place.
