101 unit youth hunt.
« on: August 15, 2016, 10:16:28 AM »
Thinking about bringing my daughter over for her first deer hunt during modern season.  Its open to any whitetail for youth hunter.  I'm wondering about any decent public land access in the area a 9 year old girl could hunt?

I know there's lots of National Forest and access shouldn't be an issue. Just be aware that the "any deer" youth whitetail season has been changed and is now only four days- October 20-23.

I took my daughter to the Vulcan Mountain area a couple of years ago. We had a great time and she shot her first deer.

101 is more mule deer on public land.  I've spent a lot of time there.  Not sure where you are in 101 but on the Republic side of Sherman if you are just looking for a doe head up Scatter Creek toward Swan Lake.  Should be able to let a kid get a couple of grouse on the drive in.  If you are on the East end head to lower Boulder Creek, normally does are right on the bottom just beware that 395 (or the kettle river there) is the boundry between 101 and 105.  105 is now open for Youth Whitetail does.  Driving up Deadman Creek might be worth it as well, just know the 1st 1.5 miles is private and the road in washboard.

For sure! 124 is probably one of the best units for youth in the state. Youth can shoot any buck or antlerless and there are a TON of deer
