Volkswagon Emissions Scandal Settlement
« on: August 16, 2016, 10:26:42 AM »
Anyone else dealing with a VW TDI settlement?

Just got our paperwork yesterday outlining what they are going to offer consumers.
I'm interested to see what others are thinking of doing, either the buyback or the "Fix"

One guy I talked to said he won't take it back to a dealer or let them "fix" it.  Don't have to go to a dealer to get warranty work done.

Right.  What I'm getting from the paperwork is that there are 3 basic options.

Do nothing and get nothing.  Keep the car as if nothing has ever happened.  (We don't have emission testing in my area)

Turn in the car to a dealer of my choice.  They give me Trade in Value as of Sept of 2015. Plus an extra cash amount.  In my case they pay off the loan and I get the difference, and a cash amount on top.  Comes out to about $7K in my pocket.

Keep the car and have it "Fixed"  get a cash payout once it is "Fixed"  about $6K.  Possible loss of mileage (most likely)  get an extended warranty on all emissions parts (term yet to be determined)
(There is no approved fix yet, so this may not even become an option)

They say nothing about having the "Fix" done at a private shop, only a Dealership of my choosing.  Not saying that's not an option but it wasn't stated in the paperwork.

My wife loves the car, I love the mileage.  Don't want to get it "Fixed" but a new model may be nice too.  Although new TDI's are not currently available.

We also need to see what they will do about the extended warranty and service plan we pre-purchased.

I don't work for VW and I don't really know anything about the fix or the settlement, but I do have lots of experience in the dealership service dept arena. I can't imagine a manufacturer paying aftermarket shops to fix their problem unless it's a situation where there are no dealers in the area... Some manufacturers will pay aftermarket shops in remote areas up in AK for example. I'd assume it will be treated like a recall. Dealers will get paid X amount of dollars by VW to do their prescribed fix.  Manufacturer will sell the parts to the dealer, dealer will mark them up 40% or so, charge VW labor to install and make out like bandits. All removed parts will have to be returned to VW for verification, then VW will pay the dealer for their work.

You guys who mentioned not wanting to go to dealers... Can I ask why not?

You're saying you don't have to go to a dealership to get factory warranty work done?  Please expand. Maybe you're talking about extended warranty or service contract work.  Otherwise, that's not true. I can tell you that with 100% certainty when it comes to the big 3 at least.
Unless there's extenuating circumstances I.E. remote areas in AK as I mentioned above.

We have all our VW work done at the dealership we bought it from.  Maintenance and repairs.  They are fantastic to work with, always a great experience.
No knock on the private shops, just seamed smart to go where I know i'll be treated right.

@jackalope I don't own a new one and am just passing along what my customer told me. He lives in the middle of Whitby Island.
Why would you not take it to a dealer?  I'm guessing  because they would essentially de tune your engine. If you don't have it fixed it's like running an after Market chip that guys with trucks have right? It's highly likely the fix will involve some kind of new software to make it pass emissions.
I have an 05 tdi and love it. We get great milage and I'm not sure I'd buy any new diesel with all the emissions crap on it.

It kinda sounds like if enough people don't take the trade in, fix or buyout VW will be in a world of hurt & it will cost them big. If it were me I'd hold out for a better deal and drive the piss out of it.

I have a 2010 sport wagon tdi and average 43-53 mpg. I have the model that can not be fixed so I'm trying to figure out what to do. I would like to keep the car but I'm not sure if the epa or WA state will force us to turn them in by not allowing tabs to be sold for them at some point.

So I'm still trying to figure out how or why someone will take their VW to an independent to be fixed. I mean, you could not take it to the dealer at all to have it fixed and not have it fixed at all I guess...but you're not going to solve the de-tuning concern by having it fixed at an independent because they won't be able to "fix" it.
I don't think the middle of Whidbey Island is remote enough to warrant the manufacturer paying an independent to make their prescribed repairs. On a small island in SE Alaska or in Ketchikan where there is no dealer and no roads in or out maybe, but not Whidbey Island.

I have a 2012 Golf and right now I'm leaning toward keeping it. VW would give us just shy of $22K for buy back and around $6200.00 if we keep it and do the fix. If you sell it back are there any tax liabilities since it is a court ordered action? I don't believe there are but not fully sure. I do know if I sell it back and buy something else I pay the taxes on whatever that is and I hate giving the government any $$$$ to waste. It gets great mileage and I think if I go the fix route it won't be long after that until someone comes out with a tuner to reverse what VW has done and I can get my fuel mileage back up.  No emissions checks where I am so if the state is tracking the fixes on this to registration then I should be able to avoid any state issues. Will continue to watch what comes out of this until I make a firm decision.

One thing to consider is how bad they depreciate once the "buy back" goes into affect. I would be betting the retail/resale value will drop like a rock.

Depreciation has already happened.  This is why they using Sept 2015 NADA values.

The packet I got claims there is no tax liability for the cash payout.  Not sure about any liability for selling it back.  I would hope there would be none but I doubt it, Uncle Sam always wants his cut.
