What's the call?
« on: August 17, 2016, 01:35:37 PM »
Well, this is the second season I am focusing on hunting bear after reading 'no baits just bears' book. I have two calls: distressed fawn and distressed hare. Former is louder than later because it is basically a pipe, and the latter is opened. I have been using mostly the distressed fawn call where bear signs are present, sitting in a camo netting in an area where I can see around 360'. So far, after about a dozen of tries,  I have yet to see any predator coming out after about 45-75 minutes of calling. I heard squirrels and rarely rumbling but nothing came out, most I do not hear anything promising. Yesterday when walking I saw a bear on an opposite ridge log road about 2 miles away. When I used distressed fawn call I saw in binoculars that he headed for brush. He peaked but did not come out. When I tried distressed hare he looked towards me, came out and shown interest.
QUESTION.
What calls do you use and find effective? How do you call? Any other tips will be appreciated.

I was using my fawn in distress call from Ric for the first time yesterday and had a doe come sprinting across the clear cut I was set up in. I could hear her grunting and bleating, I kept calling thinking she would stop eventually, next thing I know she was on top of me about 6-7 feet away still running full speed. Jumped up turned my back and yelled at her fully expecting an ass kicking. She sprung back and took off. So I guess the call works well. I wasn't using much raspiness at that point it was just the relaxed loud fawn bleat. Later I tried more raspiness but didn't get anything to come in. I called in another doe at the next stand but I stopped her at 20 yards. She didn't leave and came back 2x. Pretty good action though.

Doing fawn is a great idea into timber. When berrys are dried up in the clear cuts. I call with fawn a lot into timber. Called in quite a few bobcats doing this to. Rick

Hi Bearmanric, I've looked on your site. Is YDD3 call the one you recommend?

Thats a pretty call. Rick, correct me on this if wrong but remember calling is a progression. Start slow,  not overly loud, take yiur time, build up your volume and emotion. My short story about that is a year or do ago i got all set uo, waited for the woods to settle, then let rip a blaring rabbit dying scream. I musta, had something close by hunkered dowm because when i ripped that call it ran off and it still probably running.

Thanks Rick for the recommendation. Wanted to ask follow up question. How does standard closed reed compares to YDD3...

Here is what I copied from your website:
YDD3s are a little quieter, sort of mellower tone board. I like to use around a 2 1/2 inch long barrel because it seems to sound best for me. The sound is a little deeper than my RR1. The YDD3 is great for getting a deeper, raspier distress for calling bears.

I'm leaning towards getting YDD3 instead of standard closed reed to call a bear
