What is the purpose of the ring on left side of some lever carbines?

Yep, it used to be used to tie to the saddle.

Lots of times a leather thong was put through the ring and hung over the saddle horn, some saddles had little hooks put on the near the horn.
When the chips are down..... the buffalo is empty!!
