Tripod head question.

Do they all attach to the tripod the same way ? I have the Vortex Summit SS-P tripod and the pan head that comes with it has a problem holding up my 65 mm Swarovski. No matter how tight I lock it down the weight of the scope tips the head enough that I can't see what I'm looking at. I have to lock it down below what I want to look at and hope it tilts into view. So I want to replace it with a better pan head but not sure if they all attach to the tripods the same way.

I jumped on here to ask the same question only to find yours. I have the same tripod and a 65mm Razor HD. My holds where I lock it down but the tolarances where the quick release plate locks into the head are so loose that I have nearly 1" of travel at the end of my glass. If you find a replacement head that will fit the Summit SS-P let me know. From my research so far I have not seen anything. Thinking about contacting Vortex to see if they will warranty it but I'm afraid I wouldn't get it back in time for my hunt. Best of luck.

Not sure about the Vortex tripods, I have a Manfretto 055 tripod and a couple of different Manfretto heads.  See if you can unscrew the head from the tripod legs and you should be able to put a different one on.

I just read that it is possible to flip the center post around and use the 1/4" stud that is for the hook to mount a Vangaurd head on that threaded stud. Its looks to be a 1/4" 20 stud but I have not verified that yet. Does anyone know if the standard heads mount on a threaded stud as mentioned?

That's the exact same spot mine is moving. Although not quite an 1" of movement maybe a 1/4-1/2". I sent an email to Vortex and a PM to Elknut . About the movement and ask about different heads that would fit. Will keep you updated with answers.

I read the same thing somewhere. The threads for the hook stick out about 5/8" but not sure if the heads allow that much thread engagement.

I took the hook off and the vanguard ph111v screwed right on. Must be a 1/4-20 thread. I briefly tried taking the factory head off but gave up.....too tired. Phillips screw holding the factory head on.

Thanks for doing that. I tried to take the Vortex head off today but the Phillips screw is in there tight.
