STURGEON Picture
« on: February 08, 2009, 06:49:06 AM »
I received this picture and thought I would share.

The story is the Sturgeon was caught on the Willamette River just below Oregon City two weeks ago.  It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1". It was 56" around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in.
Any Sturgeon OVER about five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water.
They are brood / breeding stock and probably older than most of us.

Any one else heard this story?  :dunno:

Will hunt for food.

If any of you ever get the chance, don't drive by Bonneville Dam without stopping.  They have a sturgeon and trout display that is top quality.

sadest thing is if that all is true, they killed that fish no doubt... 4 plus hours of fighting equals one big dead fish

Fish was caught on the Fraiser years ago.

Hoyt, We hooked up one a few years ago that when measured at the side of the boat it was just a tad over 12 feet. I was fishing with Mike Lombard from Portland fishing adventures just up from the Fishery.

The fish went thru 4 of us numerous times for nearly 3.5 hours. I pulled myself for at least 2 of the 4. I had the drag tightened max, and both thumbs locking the spool and still could not stop this beast. I actually tried to break it off and it wouldent pull. We finally landed it but I cant see landing it any quicker.

2 of us are lifters and Im 6-3 275 and bench pert near 400. The rest of my muscles are relative. So does the old lore prevail, "If ya dont see em in an hour, you may never?"

Just wondering what you guys would do in the same situation. It aint about muscles and stamina to decrease the fight time. Not many out there have the power 2 of us had that day. Our rods were short and strong, great for pullin. Mike stayed right on top. We drifted 6 miles...

I suppose the only thing to do would be to wrap the line on a cleat and break it off with the boat.

After that fish, we were done for the day.
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.

I've seen this pic in about 5 different emails that claimed it was caught in 4 different states, that thing must swim fast.  I'm pretty sure is was caught in the hells canyon area of the snake river.  One of the emails claimed it was caught in northern Minnesota!  Thats funny because we dont have white sturgeon there (just lake sturgeon) and I've never seen a Customweld boat in the state.
