Spoon Fork or Spork
« on: August 22, 2016, 03:56:32 PM »
Hi all, I was wondering what everyone's prefered method of getting to the bottom of a mountain house pouch with out makeing a mess is. I usually use a large spoon and fork  from the kitchen but they arn't quit long enough to keep my fingers out of the food.
Any recommendations on where i can get a nice long spork?
                Thanks

Sorry, just noticed that that is no longer available. I bought two when they had them, and they are for sale for $1 million quatloos apiece.

Optimus titanium long spoon. Can be found at times for +/- $11. Weighs virtually nothing. :twocents:

I have some longer handled GSI sporks that work ok but I typically use a long handled lexan spoon, have not found a Mountain House you can't eat with a spoon yet

I don't like to cut the bags cause I usually use them as mini trash bags and sealing it keeps any residual goop out of the pack.

I agree i like to keep the bags for garbage also, and its hard to eat ramen with a spoon. I think ill just stick with the kitchen utensils for now. Thanks

Put the Mtn. House meal in a quart Ziploc bag at home and leave the Mtn. House bag in the trash at home.  its a lot less garbage post-meal and you can heat the meal up in the Ziploc.

I saw a ... sea to summit? snow peak? I forget at Cabelas the other week that was a long folding spoon, or fork ... I forget as well.  Caught my eye.  I have a short folding titanium spoork.  Im just mindful of keeping the mountain house package opened nice and wide as I dig my paws in there to get the scraps.  I dont like cutting the bags as mention so I can keep it nice and sealed up when Im done with it.  Less crap oozing around, less odor ...

How about some fancy hunting gear manufacturer make an extension like the ones we have for socket and ratchet sets. There could be different lengths and grades of spork extensions. Then the next year some new features could be added that make last years spork extension obsolete. The hunting magazines could write gear reviews about them. And we could buy the ones that our favorite hunting TV personality agreed to market.

I have a broken site light that wont turn on and less of an opinion about jim shockey who marketed them for the company if anybody is interested. My .06 shoots lethal groups at decent yardage even though i had to do without. Guess not shooting 1/64 Minute of Angle will prevent me from picking which ventricle i am going to hit at 1200 yards.

Just saw a titanium spoon and fork ( one side is the spoon and the other the fork) at Sportsmans Warehouse.  Brand was "light my fire".  $15.  Wish I had that over my titanium spork.

Sporks and forks are nice, but when I'm in the back country, 90% of the time I eat MH's, instant oatmeal, Idahoan's, and premade snacks, bagel sandwiches, and wraps. A long spoon is all I need. :twocents:

Besides, a hangry guy can clean out a MH cleaner with a spoon rather than a spork. :chuckle:

I usually pour them into my pie hole when they cool off enough. Anything on my fingers gets licked clean. I'm a pig anyway but get me in the woods and I'll start eating your pack if you leave it sitting around.

Spork makes an ok spoon but a lousy fork.   Eating backstrap with a havalon and spork is just wrong......... :dunno:

Oh gotcha. That didn't occur to me because I don't carry a pot most of the time. I was going to say, those sandwich bags don't love to be boiled

Long handled spoon is all I use and my 1st freeze dried meal is my garbage bag with a Ziploc so I don't cut them down (at least the 1st one) and  Backpackers Pantry is better than Mountain House :)

cut the bag shorter and/or use an MRE Spoon.  If you are eating an MRE, flip the pouch sideways and open it lengthwise (can't do that with a Mountainhouse bag though).

It works just fine, but we're talking about quart-size freezer bags, not the lighter weight sandwich bags.  Ultralight backpackers have been doing this for years.  I don't think it's all that big of a deal, but the Zip-loc bags are smaller and not as stiff as the bags the freeze-dried food comes in, so they end up taking less room whether full or as trash.

BTW, I almost never take anything but a spoon when backpacking.  I have a Sea to Summit Alpha Light long-handled spoon and it works great.

I also quit using the Quaker oatmeal packets and just put a cup of Quaker oats from the big cylinder/can along with raisins and brown sugar into a Ziploc sandwich bag. Eat it right from the bag. The thinner bag handles the hot water fine. Again, the trash is smaller. Having a breakfast bag ready to go is also convenient. This past week, when I bivied out from base camp, it was easy to throw the ready-to-go oatmeal bag into my kit.

take that zip lock, dump your boiling water in it, and drop it back into your jet boil. Insulates it and will cut down on wait time.  Roll the top back over the rim of the jet boil and you are now eating out of a bowl.  I don't use this method as most evenings I have tea or coffee with dinner so I boil for my meal and then while it's rehydrating I boil for my drink.

I picked up a set of 4 spork/knife combos at sportsmans. They are pretty solid and have worked great. Have a serrated knife on one end and spork on the other.

Oh and spork for me.  Cheap ones from bimart because I lose or loan them.  I have no fewer than r in various locations at all times :chuckle:
Exactly how many is r?  :o is this that new fangled math?

I buy the plastic sporks by the bull pack because I lose or break them regularly

Dang I hate pointing out other people's typos with my own!  :bash:
But you should really know by now that the bull comes before the s!

                Thanks

Oh that's easy.

If at all possible, I prefer not getting to the bottom of a mountain house pouch by making a proactive conscious decision to not eat that crap in the first place.  :chuckle:

Make good food that you actually like to eat at home.  Dehydrate it.  Put it in Ziploc quart sized freezer bags. Enjoy your food in the backcountry.

Here's an easy one: Break some angel hair pasta in half so that it fits across the bottom of a quart-sized Ziploc freezer bag. Dehydrate an appropriate amount of Spaghetti or Marinara sauce (until just past fruit leather and then break or cut into "fruit leather-type" sheets that fit neatly into the Ziploc bag). Thinly slice and fry some chicken breasts in your favorite oil and seasonings.  Dehydrate those until they are crispy and easy to crunch apart.  Put everything in the bag. To rehydrate simply rehydrate the sauce and chicken in a pot with hot water. Add angel hair pasta when it seems the prior contents are rehydrated. I guarantee it will take up less room in your pack, weigh the same or less, taste a lot better than any freeze dried meal at REI...as cost half as much.  What's not to love?

PS. - Always carry a little bottle of olive oil (or ghee) with you for added flavor and essential fats to keep the furnace burning nicely at night after a long hard day.

Backpackers pantry makes olive oil single packets that are much more convienent and far less messy than a small bottle.  I used to do that and it seemed like any bottle I would try ended up leaking

+1 - even when I taped them I had problems.  I've heard there are good solutions I just haven't found them yet.

I use a one or more of the small Nalgene bottles, depending on length of trip. No leakage problems, but I do put them in a Ziploc bag for insurance.

My first Mountain House goes into my GSI Fairshare mug. Small, Snowpeak titanium spork. If you don't oppose a lack of variety, I put one kind of meal in a gallon ziplock and just heat what you want to eat in the GSI mug... it fits an entire mountain house with water. Also ends up being my coffee mug.  :dunno:
I am not opposed to golf, for I suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering deer.
