I also quit using the Quaker oatmeal packets and just put a cup of Quaker oats from the big cylinder/can along with raisins and brown sugar into a Ziploc sandwich bag. Eat it right from the bag. The thinner bag handles the hot water fine. Again, the trash is smaller. Having a breakfast bag ready to go is also convenient. This past week, when I bivied out from base camp, it was easy to throw the ready-to-go oatmeal bag into my kit.

Put the Mtn. House meal in a quart Ziploc bag at home and leave the Mtn. House bag in the trash at home.  its a lot less garbage post-meal and you can heat the meal up in the Ziploc.

You pour boiling water into a ziploc bag?

It works just fine, but we're talking about quart-size freezer bags, not the lighter weight sandwich bags.  Ultralight backpackers have been doing this for years.  I don't think it's all that big of a deal, but the Zip-loc bags are smaller and not as stiff as the bags the freeze-dried food comes in, so they end up taking less room whether full or as trash.

BTW, I almost never take anything but a spoon when backpacking.  I have a Sea to Summit Alpha Light long-handled spoon and it works great.
take that zip lock, dump your boiling water in it, and drop it back into your jet boil. Insulates it and will cut down on wait time.  Roll the top back over the rim of the jet boil and you are now eating out of a bowl.  I don't use this method as most evenings I have tea or coffee with dinner so I boil for my meal and then while it's rehydrating I boil for my drink.

I picked up a set of 4 spork/knife combos at sportsmans. They are pretty solid and have worked great. Have a serrated knife on one end and spork on the other.

Hi all, I was wondering what everyone's prefered method of getting to the bottom of a mountain house pouch with out makeing a mess is. I usually use a large spoon and fork  from the kitchen but they arn't quit long enough to keep my fingers out of the food.
Any recommendations on where i can get a nice long spork?
                Thanks

Oh that's easy.

If at all possible, I prefer not getting to the bottom of a mountain house pouch by making a proactive conscious decision to not eat that crap in the first place.  :chuckle:

Make good food that you actually like to eat at home.  Dehydrate it.  Put it in Ziploc quart sized freezer bags. Enjoy your food in the backcountry.

Here's an easy one: Break some angel hair pasta in half so that it fits across the bottom of a quart-sized Ziploc freezer bag. Dehydrate an appropriate amount of Spaghetti or Marinara sauce (until just past fruit leather and then break or cut into "fruit leather-type" sheets that fit neatly into the Ziploc bag). Thinly slice and fry some chicken breasts in your favorite oil and seasonings.  Dehydrate those until they are crispy and easy to crunch apart.  Put everything in the bag. To rehydrate simply rehydrate the sauce and chicken in a pot with hot water. Add angel hair pasta when it seems the prior contents are rehydrated. I guarantee it will take up less room in your pack, weigh the same or less, taste a lot better than any freeze dried meal at REI...as cost half as much.  What's not to love?

PS. - Always carry a little bottle of olive oil (or ghee) with you for added flavor and essential fats to keep the furnace burning nicely at night after a long hard day.

Backpackers pantry makes olive oil single packets that are much more convienent and far less messy than a small bottle.  I used to do that and it seemed like any bottle I would try ended up leaking

+1 - even when I taped them I had problems.  I've heard there are good solutions I just haven't found them yet.
