Scouted Mt. Adams wilderness
« on: August 27, 2016, 11:10:58 AM »
I just got done with a couple day Mt. Adams Wilderness elk scouting trip and set some cams. I found a fair amount of old sign and some fresh sign and one new rub, but for the most part it was all random. There aliteracy no game trails up there. Just wondering if anyone had insight to why that is. We were up around 5500 feet.

I have spent a decent amount of time hunting that area.  What I have found is the elk wander a lot.  You will probably find them in a general area but up high I have never noticed direct travel areas.  Most of the herds have a routine or circle they wander which seems to change by growth and year.  I have found areas loaded with elk one year and next year can't even find an elk.  Lower down in the thicker stuff they seem to have smaller areas and I can almost count on certain areas having elk year after year.  Probably has a little to do wit it being open up high and feeling more vulnerable to predation.  I can tell you one thing if I thought I new what elk think they would prove me wrong the next time out.

In a civilized and cultivated country, wild animals only continue to exist at all when preserved by sportsman. FDR

Some go to church and dream of hunting others go to the woods and think of God
