High hunt!
« on: August 23, 2016, 08:48:42 PM »
Ok so my best buddy and I are dead set on going for 3 days and doing the high rifle hunt. We both have gotten the multi season for deer. I have never killed anything but rabbits and coyotes with a rifle I have only archery hunted my whole life but got a 300 this year and she is dialed in! Very excited as is my buddy. Anyone have any knowledge on the Chelan wildlife area? Is it worth it or would the alpine be better? We both want to try and have a chance at a Muley but don't know between the wilderness that are open for the early hunt. If you do not wish to post on here feel free to pm me about it, not looking for someone's honey holes just some good info on where to start, we will not have enough time to scout due to work but will be doing some scouting on google maps... Thanks to all that can help much appreciated!

What you should expect of the high hunt is an amazing backpacking trip in some of the most beautiful country in the state. Don't plan on lots of deer, plan on other hunters and if you're successful that's just icing on the cake. I don't think you can go wrong in either place. Make sure there's water accessible and go for it. That's the best way to learn this sort of thing.

I will tell you Alpine wilderness is an amazing place. I didn't see any deer when I was there, saw lots of hunters, and ran into goats on the way down the mountain.

If you don't have time to scout before the season, your hunt will be nothing but a scouting trip. There's a lot of country and there isn't a deer behind every tree, they're spread pretty thin. It's going to take a lot of luck to be successful but no matter what you will have a very enjoyable camping trip. As far as what area to hunt, they're all good, I don't think there's a wrong choice. Just pick one and learn it well.

This.

And this.

That area can get pretty dry.  Have a back-up plan if your area gets a fire closure. Make sure you have the ability to haul a lot of water if you are thinking about basing somewhere up high.  Also, if this is your first deer hunt, I'd strongly encourage you to watch a bunch of "how-to" videos on the gutless method and deboning.

Have fun and good luck!

Wow thanks for all of the replys! We were planning on long haul packing in but I do have a 17' flat bottom that we can use to boat in.

Looks like you live close to me. I'm heading out tonight on a four day bear hunt, but when I get back you can run over and I can give you a run down on gear and some other tips if you like.

A small flat bottom boat deep up Lake Chelan could yield your worst boating nightmare come true. Just throwing that out there. The lake can get real ugly real quick. You may know that already, but figured I'd throw it out there anyway.

Sounds good justinc! Jackalope I do realize how bad it can get out there, was not sure what he was referring too. But thankyou for the heads up because I do tend to forget how water and weather can change very drastically haha! Sounds good cumminsbassguy!

Yeah I would hug the shoreline if that were my plan
