“It’s a disappointing day when the state has to move forward with the last resort of lethal control, but we have come to that day,” Defenders of Wildlife director Shawn Cantrell said in a statement to NBC News. His organization, along with Conservation Northwest, ultimately supports the decision to eliminate the pack.

That's certainly an unexpected and positive surprise coming out of those two groups.

Not as unexpected as you  might think. And not the first time for CNW. Full statements:

Note that CNW also supported the wolf cull in BC to protect caribou, to much outrage from some of the group's members.

Right- CNW has really been pretty reasonable on wolf issues lately.  They are a good buffer between the groups that want all wolves gone and the ones that freak out when control actions are proposed.

Holy moley the comments are insane. Thing is I doubt they would change their tune. These "people" are so self loathing they can't fathom the idea that man was put here to make these animals dominion under us. Talk about an out of whack world we're living in.

Six wolves from Profanity Peak Pack killed by state gunners so far

ENDANGERED SPECIES -- State workers have killed six wolves so far in an effort to eliminate the cattle-killing Profanity Peak Pack in Ferry County, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department reported today.

The operation using helicopter gunners north of Sherman Pass will continue, said Donny Martorello, the agency's wolf policy leader. The pack was estimated to total 11 animals, including six pups, when the lethal control action was authorized on Aug. 4.

Since mid-July, WDFW has confirmed that wolves have killed or injured six cattle and probably five others, based on staff investigations.

Two adult female wolves from the pack were killed by state shooters on Aug. 5. When the pack continued to attack cattle, Fish and Wildlife Director Jim Unsworth on Aug. 19 authorized field staff to remove the remaining members of the Profanity Peak wolf pack to prevent additional attacks on cattle in the range lands between Republic and Kettle Falls.

Four wolves were killed Aug. 21 and 22, including two adult males and a female pup. The fourth wolf has not been recovered in the rugged terrain, Martorello said.

The Profanity Peak pack is one of 19 known wolf packs in Washington.   Based on a media release from a pro-wolf group, the Associated Press is reporting that the elimination of the Profanity Peak Pack would reduce Washington's known wolf population by 12 percent.

That's probably not true.  The population estimate issued by Washington wildlife officials this spring said the state had a MINIMUM of 90 wolves that were confirmed in 19 known packs.   Field staff say there likely were more wolves at large at that time.  Since spring, some of those packs had pups, bringing the population even higher.

So it's silly to be fussing over population figures from pro-wolf propaganda machines. It's also a bit silly to be reporting, as AP did today, that an out of state pro wolf group is outraged that a Washington pack is being eliminated.  It's not news that some people are outraged when wolves are killed.  Nor is it news that some people want all wolves eliminated, although that wasn't noted in the AP report.

The Profanity Peak pack is being eliminated under a protocol hammered out by the various factions in the state's Wolf Advisory Group. These are people who live here.

The world will not end if measured lethal control continues.

Other wolves will soon fill that niche in Ferry County if the Profanity Peak Pack that acquired a taste for beef can be eliminated.

Then maybe national forest cattle allotment issues can be worked out  and fine tuned to make sure grazing isn't done in areas near dens or pack rendezvous areas or other areas that are high risk for wolf attacks.

Maybe things can be better for the wolves and the cows next time around.

The removal of the pack is being done in accordance with wolf removal protocol established in the wolf management plan, which Conservation Northwest was a party in crafting.

Wolves Lives Matter. What we need to do is start shooting the shooters. The article does not identify who is doing the shooting. If they kill 12 wolves then kill 12 humans. With rifles.

I find these threats from bunny huggers amusing. On one hand they shout that we are all gods creatures how could you hurt one... Then go straight for the Blood Lust of killing some one.  I highly doubt they have the skills to wack some one, vandalism seems to be more thier passive agressive style, or the equiptment. The wolf groups really have no choice or they lose all credibility. They signed onto this wolf advisory group and have made it even harder to remove depredating wolves, if they go back on the deal they made to remove wolves they would lose all credibility. Make no mistake, they still oppose killing any wolves or cougars, or any other predators, they are just playing good chess to stay in the game and try to keep the control they have.  :twocents:

According to the cattleman who is losing the cattle, he has lost a lot more than 11, that is only the amount WDFW has been forced to admit to. They use every reason you can imagine to say many of the dead cattle are not confirmed wolf kills. It's an absolute disgusting situation... :twocents:

That's because the core religion and ethos of our enemies on the Left is nihilism. They're all about breaking down the distinctions between hard workers and lazy asses, male and female genders, even the value of a human life vs that of an animal.

They just had the cattleman on the radio and the wolves are still killing cattle, another confirmed kill yesterday. He said they figure a calf a day has been killed since it started earlier this summer, it's very hard to find them all in rough country, studies in WY indicate 7 dead cows for every one that's found, he's guessing 100 head may have been killed. They are having to start moving their cattle off that range early, but it sounds like they will have trouble finding them all because the wolves have scattered them so widely. What a sad state of affairs that ranchers have to sustain such losses due to a F&G agency that panders to wolf lovers!

100 cows puts a lot of feed in a feedlot.

It's going to be sad when cattle are no longer improving deer hunting areas by promoting fresh fall growth, we'll have 6 foot tall grass tinder to get fires up into the tree tops quickly.

There was a big protest yesterday at noon at the WDFW office in Olympia. Big crowd of wolf lovers, one of them even had a wolf, on a leash! They were protesting WDFW killing wolves.

The cattle rancher was just explaining on the radio that when the wolves are pushing cattle the pregnancy rate of the cows drops about 20% due to harassment by the wolves. That's some serious loss for any business.

That's a good point! I honestly have given up on Washington ever having meaningful predator management. It appears WDFW does not have the fortitude to stand up to the wolfers and the commission is slowly being stacked so that meaningful management will never happen.

yup - and they come off range lean, skinny and with a wild look in their eyes.

Cattle sell by the $/lb and sell in brackets of quality, a lean skinny cow with a wild look in it's eyes not only weighs less, but also sells for less money per pound.
