I checked the regs.on bear. I have a question.
« on: August 25, 2016, 08:46:36 AM »
Can I hunt with a modern firearm for black bear during archery deer season? I don't read anything that says I can not.

Thanks

You probably encounter some archery hunters that will tell you, you can't.

Yes you can, on page 69 it states that a hunter may use any legal weapon for hunting black bear so as long as bear season is open it doesn't matter what weapon you use since bear season overlaps most if not all big game seasons. If you look under the hunt notes on page 69 it will have two ** which will indicate which units are for archery only.

You can't hunt bear with your personal handgun while archery or muzzleloader hunting.

I was also told once that having my archery deer tag with me while rifle hunting bear was against the law so keep that in mind. That may be a case by case basis with LEO but I won't risk it anymore.

I do not believe that is a law.

So I am grouse hunting with my shotgun and dog. And I have all my tags in my pocket including a bear tag.
A dog cannot be with you while bear hunting.
Just because I have a tag for a hunt doesn't mean I am hunting that tag.

It is like saying your fishing because you have a fishing license.

That's the logic I had but I could see how it could be abused. I figure it's one of those things where some dummy ruined it for the rest of us and it's easier for me to just go with it since I wasn't hunting deer anyway than to set myself up for that particular fight.

I put all my tags in my wallet the first time I go bear hunting in August, and that's where they stay until all the seasons close.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Yeah that sounds like a load of bs.  They can site you for whatever they want ... but it will get dropped.  I have never seen anything in the regs that even hints at that.  Im sure most people carry all their tags in their wallets.

I have one attache for my hunting licence/tags and one for fishing license/cards.  I can't carry both and have room for rest of my gear

Can you hunt deer in archery season while at the same time hunt bear with a rifle?  (i.e. you are carrying your bow but also have a rifle on your back).  And to be clear, any animal would be shot with the appropriate weapon.  (I ask this because I think I heard about a case of this actually happening)

If I am not mistaken, this is illegal (or perhaps crazy).  Correct?

You can, but you're likely to be cited.

(1) The following provisions apply to all archery hunting seasons:
(a) It is unlawful for any person to carry or have in his possession any firearm while archery hunting in the field during an archery season specified for that area,

assuming you are not hunting over  bait.(salt, etc...)  I think you are fine either way, just say you are bear hunting and decided to bring 2 weapons.

b. It is unlawful for any person to carry or have in his possession any firearm while in the field archery hunting, during an archery season specified for that area, except for modern handguns carried for personal protection Modern handguns cannot be used to hunt big game or dispatch wounded big game during an archery, big game hunting season.

I would say reading this that you cannot bring a rifle with you while out archery hunting.

That's not the question though, it was weather or not he can still bear hunt in areas that are open for archery. He's not saying he's archery hunting but bear hunting. To the other question on carrying both a bow and rifle or shotgun at the same time then I guess you'd be right there. While archery hunting is what that says but there are overlap areas that are open for archery at the same time as black bear so one could go archery in the morning, then bear hunting that same spot that after noon, or later on, but not at the same time.
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter

There's two different questions being asked: one by OP, another about bringing a rifle for bear while archery hunting for deer.

Thanks fl0und3rz for the clarification I didn't know how to word it..... My plan is to just bring a friend who only has a bear tag with his rifle while I'm deer hunting archery, 2 tree stands close by so I got the security if need be

I know this doesnt answer your question , but its already kind of been answered , however my question is why not stick that bear with your bow?
