Viper HST ocular lens loose
« on: August 26, 2016, 10:39:58 PM »
Just to start this is in no way a bash on vortex, just curious if this has been a common theme with these units as I'm currently running 2 PST's and 1 HST that had the failure. When I was ready to leave yesterday morning up bear hunting I flipped up my scope caps up to find a surprise, ocular lense cocked 45% and the entire focusing eye piece flopping around. This must have happened during the hike in since I looked through it before I left the house at 4 am, never took a spill or hit it on anything. Anyway called vortex, the folks were very helpful and scope is enroute to WI now to utilize that VIP warranty. It's a 4-16x44 Viper HST, 5 months old with 200 rounds, maybe it was the wicked recoil of my 165gr ab's and varget from the 308 win... Anybody else had major  problems like this?

Yes.  I once put cleaning fluid on a Leupold scope and swirled it around then dumped it out when my lenses were dusty and I didn't want to scratch them by rubbing them.

Bad idea.  It dissolved the glue.  The outside lenses were both loose and flopping around.

Jd,
That must have been a upset. I thought on these there's a locking ring that threads in from the inside however on the viper I couldn't really tell upon looking inside it. Maybe these are just glued in aswell.

Yes they are.   You want to always use the absolute minimum cleaning fluid.  Lens Pen is all I use unless it is getting kids mess cleaned up on theirs and since I got them good binoculars I am very careful not to ever flood the lens surface.

:yike: that's pretty crazy, never looked much into the actual engineering of a scope before. I'm always careful to not get solvents/ oil on lenses, always keep caps closed etc. lens pens and lens cloths are all I use to clean. Something more is going on here tho I believe with the whole eye piece being loose and flopping around...

I have the same scope. Haven't had any issues with it. Been shooting it on my .308 for the past 2 years.
