Grouse Or Doves 9/1?
« on: August 31, 2016, 08:24:30 AM »
I'll be in the woods chasing forest grouse, but I am curious if the rest of you will be doing the same or perhaps hunting doves?

I won't be out for either for the start atleast but I read on another site that the dove numbers are down this year. Breeding success was low and there are very few birds from this year's hatch. Biologists are uncertain what the factors are but it is believed to be a combination of disease and poor conditions during peak breeding. Some guys on that thread reported finding decent concentrations of birds however. Have fun if you are out there though!

Grouse hunting here.  Been seeing a bunch of Blues will scouting.  I'm taking off work early on the 1st, picking up my oldest boy (he's almost 6) and heading out.  I'm almost as excited for this as I am for elk season; almost.

I'm heading over to Ellensburg either on 9/1 or 9/2. I'm still trying to find birds outside of town though. Does anyone have suggestions? I've gone through Umptanum Rd. I need to check out Durr Rd next. Anyone have luck in the hills north of Ellensburg?

What's a dove?  Grouse all the way.  I took a week off of work to hunt grouse.

Two dove down this morning.  Saw a good amount of them, but most where on the dirt road eating rocks.  I scared them up to push them away from the road, and from that point on o couldn't get close enough for a shot.  They were jumping up atleast 50 yards out.  But, they are around still.  I'll try again this evening.

How's everyone else doing?  How's the grouse hunting?

I'm not able to get out dove hunting until Sunday. Hopefully the temperature drop this week doesn't drive them away.

Went out today (9/1) for the Forest Grouse Opener with the wife and my springer, "Walter The Wonder Dog". The NE WA woods were still, muggy, and buggy with a mid-70's temp. Walter did his thing and got up three ruffed grouse on different flushes. Only one flush provided a decent shooting  opportunity...MISS! Walter showed signs of heat stress; so we quit at mid-morning. Fun nonetheless and 7 year old Walter was in near perfect form; especially for an Opening Day hunt.

26 doves for the 4 of us.  Bennick was the dead eye with either a limit or a near limit.   He will have some definite competition tomorrow morning.  No taking it easy for the youngsters tomorrow. >:(

if you did shoot some quail I hope you were in a different state or on a pay to hunt release area.

Oh yes sorry forgot to mention I'm over here in OR. I will get up there later this season for some grouse hunting.

Thanks buddy.  Sea salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika.  Just had my first bite and, like I said before, I'm thankful.
