A researcher’s statements about wolves interacting with livestock that stirred up controversy were inappropriate and inaccurate, Washington State University says.

As state officials work to exterminate a wolf pack, the university apologized and said it disavows the statement made by the researcher, Robert Wielgus, associate professor and director of the Large Carnivore Conservation Lab at WSU, to The Seattle Times. Wielgus “subsequently acknowledged that he had no basis in fact for making such a statement. In actuality, the livestock were released at low elevation on the east side of the Kettle Crest more than four miles from the den site and dispersed throughout the allotment,” the statement asserted.

You are not a scientist if you have a political stance on your work. You are an activist. The government shouldn't be paying activists on either side of the fence.

This really pisses me off. If I want misinformation from questionable sources I can get on the internet and get "bent" information for free. Taxpayer funded information should be truthful and neutral.

As an alumni and lifelong supporter of WSU I applaud the University for issuing its clarifying statement to correct the comments made by WSU associate professor Rob Wielgus regarding the wolf/livestock conflicts in NE Washington.  This is an extremely important issue in Washington and one that should be influenced by the highest level of scientific fact available.  WSU has a stellar reputation as a high level research university especially the animal science departments.  Incidents like these out this reputation at risk and give the university a black eye.  I received a B.S. from WSU in Mechanical Engineering and as part of my education I took an oath of ethics to perform my professional scientific duties without bias.  I would expect that WSU would hold their staff, especially professors, to this same high level of ethics.  I would like to see a full review of the research performed by Wielgus be conducted to ensure his personal biases have not been affecting his conclusions.  I would also like to see action taken to ensure personal biases are kept out of all scientific research in the future.

Especially when it comes to Agriculture and Livestock.  Whenever I see papers on crops, cattle, orchards, forestry, etc they are usually connected to WSU.  Those industries are still pretty big in this state and send lots of money back to the main schools conducting research in those fields.  I'd imagine it doesn't look good/fare well to the school to have a prof like Weilgus that is anti-agriculture.  A school like WSU would need to fix that quickly.  Maybe Weilgus should look at the Evergreen State College in Olympia.

An entity did something (not fix a fence, open a yap) and others followed this by commiting felonies.  When it is a fence, the sentiment seems to be that the plaintiffs are money grubbing lowlifes.  But because of  how the potential plaintiffs are viewed by the majority here, the correctness of a lawsuit is turned on it's head, even though in both cases neither agencyhad nothing to do with the crime committed.

This Wielgus character is only typical of all the wolf lovers.   They will lie,cheat and steal to get their way.  I'm not sure why anybody even listens to them they are so far off the wall.  He did give a ridiculous statement about cougar removal and it was just as much a lie as this bogus concoction he spouted off the wall about wolves.  Just because he's a college prof. Doesn't give him one ounce of knowledge or wisdom about managing wolves or cougars.

I think the Best way to make a big stink is to get the cattlemen association and Farm Bureau to lean on WSU. WSU is THE Agriculture school in the state and has a huge veterinary program. While it may not be possible to can this Jackwagon it is possible to shun this guy so that he gets No extra funding for any reason. We need to make him suffer for his lies. anyone who gives $ to WSU should withhold $ and tell them its because of this jack wagon.
