Just needing a little advice!
« on: September 04, 2016, 11:14:32 AM »
I know it's the beginning of hunting season for some people, and everyone wants to see pictures of some nice bucks hitting the dirt!
But I have a few questions about some new gear!
I'm not new to hunting, but I am new too hunting on my own. 2 years ago was my first time hunting on my own, and I've really just been using the gear that's been handed down to me from my dad and grandpa. Which is awesome, but I'm wanting to get some of my own stuff.. So just out of curiously has anyone ever used any of these packs or binoculars? They are far from the most expensive stuff out there but it's what I can afford and just hoping its some decent stuff!
Also if anyone has a preference in what the best for binocular zoom is? 8x42 8x50??
Thank you in advance, hopefully these arnt "dumb" questions!

Welcome. There are better options on binoculars. I'd look into 10x42 models. The Alps pack is a nice pack, but meant a little more for overnight stays rather than a day hunting set up, although it can be used as one. Looking for used quality gear would be my recommendation. Tell us what kind of hunting you'll be doing most, and you'll get lots of advice from folks.

That makes sense, thank you!
I will normally be doing day trips, last year I had planned on a day trip but ended up taking loner then expected so I ended up staying the night up there. But I ALWAYS pack for situations like that! I don't mind staying out in the hills but I usually hunt close to home and can make it back sometime by then end of the day!
I love all hunting, but my favorite time of the year is rifle deer season! I've shot 5 mile deer (3 does) and 2 bucks
Elk (2 cows) and ( 1 spike)

I couldn't agree more about 10X42. I have the Vortex Diamondbacks and while there are definitely better out there, for the money they cant be beat.

I'll second the vortex Diamondbacks 10x42. Awesome binos!

:yeah:  I don't have them, but everyone raves about them.  It comes down to personal preference as to the size of the objective lens and the magnification.  I have a spotting scope for long distance glassing, so I like the 8X - 42 binos for still hunting (as I don't need the magnification as much).

If you're looking for a pack frame for packing out animals, the Alps is a decent choice,  If you want to carry gear, well, I haven't tried that part of the backpack yet.  I took it off the frame when I got it and put it in the garage.  You might consider looking for both items on Craigslist (rather than ebay).  You can inspect the item before you buy and occasionally get some quality gear on the cheap.

I also have the same backpack (strange, same gear as F&F!).  I have never used either the pack frame or the bag that comes with it.  You are right, it is not expensive.  If you are looking to save some coin, this is not a bad option.

I had a bad experience buying my first one from Alps Outdoorz.  The frame was defective.  They replaced it, and all is well with the world.  It looks solid, and I carry it in my rig, just have not had a chance to use it yet.
