Boyd's stocks

I'm thinking about putting a Boyd's stock on my Ruger American. Does anyone have one? Pros, cons?

If your looking at a thumbhole, they are nice for a bench gun but a pain as a hunting rifle.  I own three thumbhole stocks and none of them go hunting other than PD's and GS's.

I've used Boyds stocks.  Hard to beat for the money.  I like the prairie hunter model for general purpose hunting.  I suggest adding some stippling to the grip which Boyds's has several options to choose from.

I have a Boyd's Rimfire Hunter on my Marlin 17HMR. It's an excellent stock, perfect fit and finish but the laminate is very heavy!

That's a nice looking stock! I know it'll be heavier than the composite stock that came with it but I'm looking for something more substantial than that cheesy stock.
I've been looking at the prairie hunter in pepper and kinda like the scale stippling but not sure what pattern.
Which recoil pad did you guys go with?

Thumb hole stocks are miserable to carry in the field, but nice to shoot off a bench.

I have the Walnut classic style with the custom stippling on the grip and forearm for my model 70 Winchester rifle which had the super shadow black plastic factory supplied stock.  The bad part was I had to file off some metal at the bottom of the blind magazine well but not too bad otherwise. The recoil pad is just a 1/2" hard rubber nothing special recoil pad in contrast to the decelerator pad which came on the plastic stock from the factory.  Not the same dimension so it could not be re-used.

I've had a few and they've all been nice. I still have a nutmeg laminate thumb hole stock on the 6.5 Badger that works well for me. Like the others said though, thumb holes aren't ideal if you're a snap shooter.

I've bought a few boyds.  My experience is they're good stocks, bit heavier obviously, fitment is good, but their basic clear coat is very thin.  Spend a few extra $$ and get extra coat or 2.  And whatever you do don't try refinishing a perfect good stock.  I once tried refinishing their stock to get a high gloss and what a PITA it was. Because of the laminate gluing it would not soak up the finish, so it became blotchy.   Also dont believe what the customer service rep say about having to "custom make" each stock.  She told me it was going to take 2-3wks for them to make it due to their production schedule.  Well when it finally arrived i noticed there was a small sticker with a mft date stamp from the previous year.   OH ALSO.... pay the extra $$ and have them upgrade your recoil pad.  The stock pad is like a hockey puck.  If you dont you'll be hard pressed trying to find an aftermarket pad that isnt a custom grind to fit, which will end up costing you more money.

l ordered two same day! A Mauser 96- not available! Win. 70 -Fit is good... Finish is less quality than any factory stock I've ever owned! I would not recommend ordering from boyds ...  The customer service rep sent a note stating order was canceled because 1 was no longer available! After 4 phone calls about it... The answer i got was we'll check on it & call you back! Never called back or emailed!!!  A week later & 2 more calls to find out they no longer made one type! Mine was ordered & recieved but took 2 months! Not 2-3 weeks like thier web site says!
P.s. My calls about the finish quality amount to read the warranty enclosed with stock! Which to para phrase basically says Finish is not refundable issue! My advice don't order anything from this company!

I have four of the Boyd's thumbhole stocks on different rifles. I hunt SA plains game with a Browning .338 that has a camo Boyd's thumbhole.
Both me and a bud shoot sage rats with Savage .17 HMR mounted to Boyds thumbholes. I like the feel of the thumbhole!
The finish is good, but as stated in a previous post, a bit lean.
I finished my own, and it turned out pretty good for an amateur!
