Brass or Nickel?
« on: February 09, 2009, 08:27:12 AM »
Im buying a bunch of cases for my 300, 243, 7mm, etc and I'm ordering it off of Midway and one of the guys at work told me to buy Nickel plated because they don't thin out at the neck as quick, they are only $3 more per 100, what are your thoughts?

thanks...

I would agree with your guy at work.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

You will not get the life out of nickel that you do out of brass.  After 3 or 4 reloads of nickel you will start getting split necks.  Also if a nickel case gets damaged you might as well through it away.  They are very hard to straighten back out.

Buy Brass.
Nickle cartriges pick up dirt and inbed it into your loading dies. And can scratch the hell out of them.
Loned a set to a guy and he loades nickle brass and ruined my dies that way. :bash:

I like nickle for my .38Super, but that's all.  Nickle is harder on your dies.
Progressives are coming for your guns.
What are you going to do?

Well me, I do not have any guns, gave away or sold them 15 years ago.

Shoot carbon, but would like to dive into making my own wood.  Have even attempted making my own arrowheads.

Nickel is more brittle and will not "stretch" as much. Resulting in shorter brass life.

Last time I tried to shoot Carbon out of one of my guns it didn't do so well. :chuckle:

I agree here.  You may also see alot of variation in the thickness of the metal at the case mouth with nickel.  They look cool but are not worth a damn.
