Actual bear success rates/ questions for next year
« on: September 09, 2016, 01:56:49 PM »
I was looking at the 2015 success rates for bear hunting and was shocked to see how low it was (6.8%). Then I thought about how many of those tags/ reports come from people who just bought combo licenses or didn't put in a dedicated bear hunt. Curious if anyone had an idea of what the success rates look like for people who are out there doing a 3-4 day dedicated bear hunt in the fall. Even guesses are welcome, just looking for an idea.

I'm looking at doing a bear hunt next fall with my hunting buddies instead of a bachelor party. Any advice on NE washington camping areas for good bear hunting or some fishing are greatly appreciated too! And I'd also like to talk to anyone who has purchased a Bearpaw DIY map to see if thats something to consider too.

I think the actual success rate for dedicated bear hunters is around 20%, +/-5%
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I saw your bear from this year, looks great! and that area looks beautiful. How long had you hunted before you tagged out?

I used to just buy the whole package and would shoot one if I saw one while hunting other animals; which is probably where the low success rate comes from. However in the past 3 years I have found myself to love to hunt and eat bear meat. I have been 3/3 ever since. One every year for the past 3 years in Eastern Wa.

I would agree that there is a higher success rate for dedicated bear hunters , just look at the HW bear thread , the same people post stories year after year . But I would say that of all big game hunting , there are a few that get it done every year . For my wife and I , we got serious 3 years ago , since then we've seen well over 20 bear , I've taken 2 and her 1 and this season isn't done yet . We find it much easier to pattern bear than blacktail . Learn the food sources and habitat and you'll get it done .
