To answer your question about why they changed the season from any deer to any buck would be because the area got hit hard with blue tongue last year. Deer numbers are down and need a break to come up. I agree that they should've adjusted for a youth only muzzy season any deer up there.

That's the same bs I was just reading on the wdfw Web site and if anybody knows the areas up there like the 111 to 113 the 108 and 105 nose there's more days there are bucks up there that's what the whole reason I went back to shooting muzzleloader was because it was still either sex and that way my kids could just learn how to take an animal down and not have to worry about if it's got horns or not

Well part of hunting is learning how to identify animals, what species they are, and if they are legal or not. :

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with posting pictures of big bucks or books that have been harvested this year so far what I'm saying is that people should be more inclined to show their support with the up-and-coming youth Hunters and I would congratulate everybody that has got a buck so far this year during archery season congratulations I'm just asking for this forum to show a little more support for our youth because I don't care if I get a deer at all I'm out there to take my son out to get his first deer and to see you then Washington state does nothing besides keep trying to shut down hunting for all of Washington State and no one can say that they don't because I remember when I was younger first starting out hunting there wasn't nearly the regulations for stipulation or backdoor deals that fish and game do with all of the political crap I remember it when you could just go out by your tag go hunting drop the deer or an elk or whatever you would like those to her before and it was just nothing besides you and the thrill of the hunt Washington state has pretty much made it so hunting is no longer fun or entertaining or something you can do to feed your family that is all I'm trying to say

And there is tons of support for youth hunters on this site, you just haven't been a member long enough to see it in action. People sponsor youth hunts, contests, give away hunting clothes for free that thier kids have out grown, offer up private ground free to youth to hunt on, offer up areas that are known to hold deer for youth, plus much much more.

Have you thought about, or put your kids in for an antlerless permits, if not I highly recommend it, it worked well for all three of my kids.

I would first like to apologize to everyone it was not my intention to start bashing on people it's just pretty frustrating that you've had your kid jump through all the political BS learn everything there is to pass hunter's education and I have been taking them up to the area that he will be hunting in all summer long so he can learn how to pattern deer and my son is one of the smartest kids I know actually sat down and read the hunting pamphlet from cover to cover he can identify the difference between a whitetail mule deer or black tail but for the last 2 months he has been tracking doe has learned the approximate time of when they will cross where he will be having his tree stand he knows when they come in in the morning and he knows when they come back through in the evening Annie's been keeping a close eye on the biggest doe out of the 3 and now come to find out the deer that he has been patterning for the past 2 months he can't even hunt now and it's just heartbreaking to a father to see his son put that much work into something just to see the government turn around and shut it down and I've hunted in the 108 area for the past 10 years hunting modern firearm and I have seen more doe running around up there then I have bucks up in the 108 area there was not a whole lot of blue tongue that was found have definitely kept my eye out my ear to the ground to hear if the blue tongue have got up into the normal areas I hunt and I haven't heard of a lot of people having to report about blue tongue up in the areas that I normally hunt that kind of seems suspicious that they would change all the units but the 124 unit to anybody from any deer the 124 unit you can still hunt any deer but a lot of that land is either Empire Paper Company or private land and most of the private land owners that I have talked to don't let people on their land to hunt because they are waiting for family members to hunt that land or they are just against hunting altogether and I apologize again to everyone for taking out my frustrations out on you guys that wasn't my intention when I originally posted

124 has a LOT of deer.  It is a daily occurrence for me to see deer while driving or walking around my neighborhood.  It also does stink that most of it is private but I tell you what, that IEP pass is pretty much a no brainer for my family.  The family pass is only $65 (ask the guys from the west side how much they have to pay to play on some of the timber lands there) and this allows you to take your whole family (wife and kids) out in the woods.  You also can take something like 5 cord of wood, pick berries and my favorite find a Christmas tree (which now a days cost about the same at a grocery store lot).

not asking for my son to have instant success teaching him how to track deer and how to learn their patterns has been great letting him have his hopes up and turn around and now he has to try and find a buck and learn it pattern within the next couple weeks when he's already spent so much time and energy makes me feel bad for him I'm not saying that he's entitled to kill whatever he feels like I'm saying that he's worked his ass off to learn everything he can and for them to change it from any deer to anybody makes him think that we should even go hunting now after all the work that he's put into it just to turn around and be able to Harvest the dough that he's been putting a pattern to like I said earlier I could care less if I kill one or not I'm more out there to help my son and have him share in the joy of harvesting a deer

I'm a west side hunter. I believe it's upward of 300 dollars for a certain timber pass. 385 dollars maybe? I'm not certain but a family pass for 65 dollars sounds like a steal to me...

And don't forget 139 for late season.  Knock on farm doors (in advance of season) and emphasize that it is for your son, and that it is a bit of a one-time deal, since regulations have changed temporarily in your usual hunt.  I think there are good folks out there that will be responsive.

I think it may be a great lesson for your son to learn that game animal numbers (and the rules by which we hunt them) are subject to disease, hard winters, predation, changes in forage, and so much else.  For you, it is an opportunity to mentor him not just on how to hunt, but how to have a positive attitude towards the challenges of the hunt, especially from year to year.  As he learns about all this, he will turn out not just to be a skilled hunter, but importantly, a hunter-conservationist.  Deer in the truck, or not, that is a win, for him and for the resource.  Good luck to you and your boy.
