A weekend to never forget!

It is always hard to hunt with somebody you have never hunted with before but I invited my buddy Joel to deer hunt with me in one of my favorite spots.  Spot and stalk Mule deer is a difficult way to hunt with a bow.  I have hunted those hills for years but always with a muzzle loader until I switched to archery.  This hunt would lead to my first archery buck and a whole lot of memories.

We loaded up the truck Wednesday night.  Thursday morning we saw a few buck but nothing that was stalkable as the wind was swirling.  Friday we headed out and spotted a big 3 point with eye guards and appeared to be perfectly symmetrical.  A couple hours and a lot of does later the buck busted out as ither deer ran past him.  Saturday we decided to try another area as I could check my Cameras.  Two legal bucks but nothing special.

Fast forward to Sunday morning.  We are back in the spot and we are not coming back until dark unless we get ine down.  We pack our lunches and gear.  Did not bring enough water.  Checked a canyon and no bucks.  Next canyon anf buck everywhere.  Immediately we see two shooters feeding just off the top.  Busted that stalk.  We saw 5 bucks total in that draw.  Find a high point to glass from and immediately are finding bedded bucks. 

Eventually we find a what we thought was a 3x4.  I decide to stalk him but picked my path carefully from where I was.  We found a two point bedded just above him.  When I got ove there the wind was wrong.  I texted my buddy so he knew I had to change the plan and he said go with your instinct.  I immediately drop off the edge and get to the bluff I wanted to be at.  Find the two point bedded 100 yards below me.  I remove my boots and leave them with my pack.

I weasled my way 40 yards past the two point in plain sight.  I used the noise of the wind to move.  I stayed low in the grass and took about half an hour to move the last 20 yards.  I finally found the buck.  I had snuck within 29 yards and now it was a waiting game.  The buvk fell asleep and I took advantage practicing my draw as I was on an extremely steep slope.  When the buck awoke he looked right at me.  Put his head in the air and tried to smell.  The wind was in my favor so he couldn't but I knew he saw me so I drew.  I waited for him to stand and he wouldn't.  I knew I could not let down as he was staring at me.  There was a gap and I could see his vitals so I let one fly.  I hit a limb and it hit just above his back.  He jumped up stared at the arrow as I knocked another one and he looked at me as I drew again.  30 yards quartering to.  I let it fly and it flew true.  As he went over the hill I could see blood pouring.  I knew he was dead.  I looked up at my buddy to see him packing everything and heading my way.  He watched him drop.

I go get my pack and boots and get back down to where I had shot.  Found my arrows found blood.  My buddy came all the way down and all the way up to me.  Blood trail of 60 yards then crimson going down the hill.  The blood trail looked like a jest stream where he fell.  200 yards down beneath a tree was my buck.  Ended up being a 3x6 as the four had a double brow tine.

I am a true believer that you know when you have found a life long hunting buddy.  Uphill out of one of the steepest holes most people will ever see with 84 pound of meat plus the head and gear and then 6 miles back to the truck.  Not one complaint just pure adrenaline and excitement!

Great story and buck.  Congrats on the new hunting partner.  A good hunting partner is tougher to find than a good friend or a good wife.    Lucky for me I found all three.

I am kind of getting used to it my bear and deer have been taken care of there this year!  Thanks your right!  I dhould have mentioned that!
