Snake den
« on: September 08, 2016, 11:23:02 AM »
So last weekend I moved a trail cam down to one of my favorite elk hunting spots.  The trails are torn up and there is plenty of sign.  While trying to get where I wanted to set up the Cam I walked right into a rattlesnake den.  The den sits right next to the water where the elk come into it.  My question is do I hunt over the snake den or try something else?

They don't seem to be aggressive.  I don't like snakes at all but I will hunt it.  My biggest worry is shooting an elk with a snake bite.

You will know if one has been bit.  I seen a Bull beef cow that got struck in the neck, his neck was 3 times normal for over a week!  It was crazy looking but he lived just fine.

No these are timber rattlers.  They did not make a peep I walked in between like 5 of them. Must have been too cold.  I retraced my steps out.

Screw it...I am going to hunt sunday and if I locate the elk near snake den sunday night I will go in early Monday morning.  I am going to buy some snake gators and I will show them.  Pick up some bird shot for the .40 and kill some snakes.

No timber rattlers in WA, they are all the same species.

I'd hunt over it and not worry about the den.  It doubt the elk really worry about it.

So will your .40, just hunt it and let them be. Pretty cool sight I'd bet, just watch for them while accessing through there. Good luck!

I don't think you would want to get close enough to a rattler to try and kill it with bird shot through a .40.

Rattlers are cool! Taste good too. Leave em be and they will leave you be. Read somewhere they can only strike half their body length. Stay outside of that. Know where a big den is at in Winthrop. Try to take my family up there ever couple of years. Pick out a couple of big ones for dinner.

I love snakes. I'm not especially afraid of them either. We killed 8 snakes with shovels in the same 15 Sq ft back in montana a couple years ago. At least 2 got away. They were all right on the road and right by the house. Scary thought with all my young cousins around.
