How to cut stove jack hole in rainfly?
« on: September 09, 2016, 06:50:28 AM »
I am going back to a wood stove this year (purchased a 4 dog) and am trying to figure out how to cut the clear poly tarp rainfly around the stove jack.  Any suggestions?  I'm unsure as to how close to cut it to the stovepipe and how to reinforce the edges on the newly cut hole.  I'd like it to last a few years...  Do I just fold the cut tarp under and use some kind of high heat tape?

Any tips/pictures or suggestions would be appreciated!

Well here is what i did .

I set up my tent.
Got a fly, (white plastic tarp.
Positioned it on tent. 6ft. out front, 12 inches out back and 12 inches or more on sides. I marked the four frame corners on the tarp so I can put it on by myself in the same spot.

Than I went in my tent with the stove pipe flap open and traced the hole on the under side of tarp.
Than I pulled the tarp off and put it on a table exposing my mark.
Than I drew a square with the hole in the center. I left 4 inches from my tracing of the pipe all the way around.

 I cut that square out.

Than I reinforced the edge with heat duct tape that you can get at any hardware store. Both sides all the way around the square 4-6 inches out.

Than I put it back on the sent to check fit.

Than I took it back off and on the outside side i made a cover flap just like the one on the tent. For the fly. I made it from some heavier material like is used for banners.
I made it over lap the hole I cut by 6 inches. And put a grommet in the eave end two corners. So I can tie it back when in use .

I have used this seven times now with my three dog and had zero issues.

The Four Dog stoves are so well built with the baffle ,the stack dosent get that hot. and cools quickly.

I will post photos latter.

Hope this helps.

The rain fly for our wall tent has always been the clear heavy duty plastic stuff you get from Home Depot to cover floors and furniture when you paint. We setup the tent, put the rain fly over it, cut a hole a little bigger than the opening for the stove jack, and we're done. If the plastic is to close to the stove jack it'll melt, so in reinforces it's corners on it's own. We normally replace the rain fly every 5-6 years.
