Pb muzzleloader red stag
« on: September 10, 2016, 01:57:38 AM »
G'day all,

It's all winding down now, the stags have dropped their antlers so I've got the next few months to chase foxes and hares with the bow and squeeze in some fishing.

Thought I'd share my hunting highlight of this year though.

Managed to roar in this cracking old stag and shoot him with my muzzleloader from 20m. As the smoke cleared he hadn't moved a muscle.

Not that I'm into records but I'm fairly sure he's the biggest free range aussie red taken with a muzzleloader.

Aged him at 12 years old plus with teeth nearly worn to the bone.

Awesome. Congrats and thanks for sharing.

Pretty terrible to be honest. Not sure what rutting elk are like in the states but reds at the end of the rut are pretty rancid. I used the backstraps for jerky and had some steaks but the dogs got a fair portion of the rest.

Bearing in mind Australia has no requirement to take the meat unlike the states. Lots of guys (and I do mean lots) purely chase deer for antlers and will cut off the head and leave the rest of the animal. Personally I can't do that though so I try to take what I can
