ATV Question
« on: September 10, 2016, 08:24:18 PM »
I got an ATV lst year and am planning on using it this year for Chuckars. Does anyone else here use an ATV in the desert area's and if you do what helmet do you reccomend. I am not a huge fan of sweating like crazy so I want to get as light weight as possible but still be legal.

Do you legally have to wear a helmet?

I looked it up. You do have to wear a helmet at all times. It's called the wussifacation of America law.

It's called being responsible for your safety because people (even with insurance) cannot afford to pay for brain injuries, which means rest of the public has to foot the bill for your recreation mishap.

Not true.  Ive rode all my life no helmet, some of us dont get all drunked up and decide to ride atv's.   People still climb mt rainer and we the tax payers still foot the bill..   My safety is ride safe, know your limits and dont drink and ride.

Firedog,
It's called Tyranny. I don't need someone else or the government telling me what's safe and what's not safe. Riding a 4 wheeler five miles an hour while chuckar hunting does not warrant wearing a helmet. The truth is we can't afford the government deciding that they should be involved in every aspect of our life. But they are and they are creating a society of wussies that think it is ok.

While I agree with the stupidity of the helmet laws as far as chukar hunting goes, I like to not have run ins with law enforcement when I would rather be busting up chukars. Another question for those ATV riders out there. I am trying to come up with a solution for my dog. My son is coming with us this year for his first chukar hunt so he will be riding on the ATV with me, the problem is now with him on it I am crammed for space for the dog, while most of the time the dog can run with me, we do drive a long ways back into Chukar territory and would rather not have the dog running 30+ miles a day extra. For reference I have a 2016 Yamaha Kodiak 700 with https://www.amazon.com/ATV-Tek-ASPBMOB-Padded-Bottom/dp/B005IUPMD2/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1473779626&sr=8-7&keywords=ATV+bags on the back. I can remove one side of the bags and am thinking that might be enough space for a dog kennel. Any idea's or maybe a solution you came up with would  be awesome.

We wear half helmets, much like the bikers wear on the roads. We've found that it keeps us legal/safe, cooler than a full face, we can communicate with each other, and you can shoot with the helmet on (off the bike, of course)

Kind of feel like a dork wearing it but it's worth it...

The bike helmet seems like a good idea. What about a skull cap you could shoot with that on. For the dog what if you welded a trailer hitch insert on the back up high then put a small luggage carrier off that to put the dog box on.

(3)(a) Except for an off-road vehicle equipped with seat belts and roll bars or an enclosed passenger compartment, it is a traffic infraction for any person to operate or ride an off-road vehicle on a nonhighway road without wearing upon his or her head a motorcycle helmet fastened securely while in motion. For purposes of this section, "motorcycle helmet" has the same meaning as provided in RCW 46.37.530.

Riding double is a no no too.  Light Harley helmet is the coolest.  Get a hitch basket rack (Harbor Freight 50$) to put dog in. Handy for hauling gear as well.  You will be quite tippy with it and a passenger.
MAGA!  Again..

I don't think it would be too tippy on a Kodiak 700. I like those bags/seats on the back rack, but I would get the stirrups. My dad has that seat on the back of his quad and it is much more comfortable after he added the stirrups. I'm thinking the memories you are going to make with your son is awesome. Riding with you and the pooch into chuckar country. Lucky kid!
