Primers??
« on: February 09, 2009, 03:02:45 PM »
What is the difference between large rifle and large rifle magnum? One would think the magnums were for belted mags and very high power loads but some data shows some loads with either size primers. I also picked up some CCI bench rest LR primers. The guy at G.I. JOES knew nothing on the subject. These were the only LR primers in vancouver. Can someone educate me on this subject? Thanks

Generally you use non magnum primer, with non magnum cartridges.
Magnum primers will raise pressure so if you are loading HOT you can have higher pressures. Some slow burning powders work better with magnum primers however. :dunno:

Magnum primers are best for slow burning powders especially in large capacity cases however, Speer recommends using magnum primers with any ball or spherical powder charge for better , more reliable ignition.  I've heard that magnum primers are also the way to go when used for hunting in extremely cold climates.
The cci br primers as I understand it, are slightly less explosive as the normal cci 200s but are suppose to have more uniform body and anvil dimensions.
