Finally got my first.
« on: September 12, 2016, 08:11:11 PM »
After 8 years of archery hunting I finally killed my first bull. I suck at writing stories so bear with me.

I woke up later than I would have liked so I decided hit one of my closer spots. Got there right after light and hiked down into the draw, my hopes weren't high with the warm weather we've been having and the lack of rutting activity I've been seeing. I started with some soft cow calls that gradually got a little more excited.  Called for 20 minutes or so and not a peep so I started calling and moving to the other side of the clearing, I'd been getting several pictures of bulls in the area on my trail cams so I knew they were around. (I have several hundred of this bull)

Got to the other side and called a little more and started hearing what sounded like cows mewing. I convinced myself I was hallucinating and blew a few more calls with no response. I was getting ready to head back to the truck to try another spot that I had got into elk in the night before. For whatever reason I decided to blow a big raspy bugle just before I left and as soon as I did I got a chuckle out of the timber. I pulled out the Phelps green hornet and let a couple rip and heard crashing through the timber. I took cover behind a slash pile and elk started filing out, three small Bulls and one legal.

I started planning my route to put a stalk on the legal bull and as soon as I moved a big bugle came from the timber, a pile of cows came out with my bull in tow. They were still around 100 yds away so I gave a couple more toots on the green hornet and the cows came running right at me, they got within 10 yds, but the bull was still hanging back. The sun was directly behind me so I don't think they could make out quite what I was, but the wind shifted to my back and I knew I was running out of time. I decided was going to take one of the cows, hard to pass up a 10yd shot, but as I started to draw the bull came out from behind the slash pile, I had to take a quick guess at the yardage and boy was I wrong. Hit the ground about 5 feet before the bull. He turned to run as I was going for another arrow and I thought it was over, but for whatever reason he stopped quartering away and gave me another shot. This one was money, right behind the shoulder and blood exploding immediately!  He ran about 10 yards and took a massive nosedive. My Rage hypodermic nearly split his heart in two.

Then the work began...  Let him expire and went to call the troops, turns out everyone works Monday lol Wrestling a bull solo isn't any fun at all, but it was getting hot so I had to work quick. Got him quartered and as much trim meat as I could and help finally arrived to get him to the truck and on ice.

Awesome! Was this the bull that you thought we both were getting on our cameras?
