Idaho unit 4 help
« on: August 08, 2016, 11:24:28 AM »
Looking for a little help, in terms of narrowing down some areas in unit 4 Coeur d'Alene NF for archery Elk. Some buddies and I were planning a trip to another unit, but those plans changed as soon as one of them drew 1 of 2 Wenaha West muzzy permits (lucky SOB!), so our original plans are out the window. I'm looking to do some Bonzi style hunts into unit 4, as ill be spending two weeks helping him with his permit. I have a scouting trip planned in a couple weeks with my route heading in from the south end of the forest.

Any info shared in this thread, or via PM, is greatly appreciated!

Tony

Dont waste your time coming over opening day, it will be a zoo.  After the 15th, the B tag archery guys all go home and there is not a lot of pressure.  Elk are usually vocal then and easier to locate.

I am heading that way this weekend to have a look around.  I haven't hunted the area myself either.  I tried to contact the biologist for the area, but haven't heard back.  There is a few spots I have picked out, but my biggest worry is all the roads in the area really make it look like it will be hard to get away from the crowds.

Thanks for the heads up, I really appreciate it!

I had the same thoughts as you in terms of all the roads. There's a couple areas that I'm sure you've seen too, that are far enough away from the roads, but lets just hope those areas don't turn into some sort of hunter magnets because they are semi remote

Good luck on your scouting trip!

There is allot of country there, I just hope getting some elevation away from them will be enough.  Good luck as well.

Here is the deal with unit 4.  I have been hunting it religiously for some time now.  I know where those areas are that you are looking at that you can get away from the roads and yes you will find other guys there as well.  They are good areas to check out, lots of nice bulls come out of there every year.  I will say, do not let the roads scare you.  Its been said many times on this forum, get a couple hundred yards away from the road and it will be just you and the elk. It is true.  Once you are off the road, you will find the game trails, follow these and locate the bulls.  All the elk we have shot up there have been within 300 yds of a road of some sort.  They will shut up when a truck drives by, but once they pass, they will be bugling just the same.  Its very thick up there and generally only the archery guys really go in after them and pursue them.  One of my favorite spots is 100yds off a main road,  I park the truck, walk down the trail, and generally I can sneak in and get into the elk in their beds.  If I am too late and they are up moving, a few bugles and they will start talking.  If you get a chance to go scout, pick a spot on a map, go there and then walk around and see how long it takes to find a game trail, wont be long :)

Day one is in the books.

Had a 45yrd opportunity at a five.... While I was waiting for him to turn, an unseen cow popped up out of her bed and the game was over :bash:

Looking forward to day two!

Nice! I'll be heading back Saturday night. The Bulls in the area that I was hunting were silent. Good luck!
