Old boys Utah hunt
« on: September 15, 2016, 08:26:07 AM »
Flying to Salt Lake tomorrow to meet my two older brothers for what should be a fun hunt.  Oldest brother (76yrs old) drew the early rifle LaSalle bull elk tag and my next older brother (73yrs old) drew the Parker valley antelope tag.  They recruited me to go along (I'm 70) thinking maybe the 3 of us combined might equal one half way decent hunter.  We know both areas extremely well so don't think getting an animal will be that hard, it's getting them cleaned an loaded that will be the real challenge.  I don't think a week will be enough time to even put a dent in all the old hunting stories we need to relive around the campfire, but I'm sure we'll give it a try.  Hope to have some pic's to add when I get back.

Best of luck and times to you and your brothers baldopepper
Awesome that you all can go do it together.  Hopefully someone will stop and lend a hand if needed on the animals.  Looking forward to pictures!

Well got to Salt lake Friday early enough to get down to the LaSalle early enough to get camp set up and go do a little looking around.  Very hot and things didn't look great. Couple spots that always have elk had no sign and no answers to our calls. Stayed out late and never heard a single bugle.  Next morning we hit a couple of other spots with the same results.  No sign, no call backs.  Early evening we hiked down to a secluded water hole we know and finally got a weak call back and there was a little fresh sign. Decided to drop my oldest brother there the next morning while my other brother and I did a little more looking around. We left him the next morning with a beat out old walkie talkie, told him we'd come check back in a couple of hours and took off. We did spot a small herd but they were headed into a area where old fats like us aren't capable of going.  Headed back to where we'd left my brother and hailed him on the talkie. We got just the response we wanted-"get your butts down here and bring your knives" .  Seems a bull  poped out to water and Jim welcomed him with his model 88 winchester 308.  Fun was over.  Spent most of the rest of the day packing him out. That evening we recuperated in camp and reshot (and remissed) the many deer, elk, antelope and any other legal game our 200+ years of combined hunting has sent our way. Next morning we broke camp and took the elk to a processor in Huntington UT (we normally cut, but we needed to go get my other brother his antelope)  Got done in time to be down on the Parker Mtn Plateau by late afternoon and start hunting. Saw a couple herds, but was the third day of the hunt and they were pretty skittish.  Finally spotted a lone buck out a good three hundred yards and danged if my brother didn't knock him over with his old model 88 winchester 243 (old weaver k4 scope)   We were done. Did they shoot any thing in the B&C trophy range. Nahhhh. Did they shoot a couple of animals that will make another good chapter in our big book of hunting memories. You bet  May not be our last hunt together, our father shot his last deer at 85 and we hope to outdo that, but the soles of our hunting boots are getting pretty thin. Thinking we'll grab the fish poles and go drown some worms tomorrow.
