Antelope 700 Montana ??
« on: September 15, 2016, 10:45:02 PM »
This will be my first time hunting antelope. I drew a Antelope B (Antlerless) tag for the 700 unit in Montana. I plan to drive into Billings and hunt from there. I know there are quite a few public land options around there but am not sure where to start. Considering it's a doe tag, I don't think I should have too much trouble but would love some direction. I have about 2 or so full days to hunt.

I'd love feedback from anyone who has hunted there, or knows the area.

Hope everyones season has started off well!

Thanks,
Daniel

My son and I hunted out of Hysham several years ago and ate our tags, but that was the year after the double whammy of 70% winter kill and Blue Tounge that hit in the summer.  All we found were skeletons (and one small herd a half mile away and running like hell).
From what I've read, the herds have been recovering, but make sure you call a biologist in the area you are going to hunt and find out what the deal is.  I burned 4 years of points to draw that tag.
To make matters worse, as soon as we got west of Billings and were out of the 700, we started seeing tons of antelope...
Still a little sore about that one... >:(

Thanks for the info, ill be sure to contact a biologist to get an idea of the antelope status. Sorry to hear about eating the tag.

There are some great BMA in that corner but beware...not all of them were created equal! We hunted one that had antelope but they were 3/4 of a mile away in the flatist piece of ground around, no way to get close to them!
If you look at the population trends for the SE corner they are very impressive! On a good growth path the last 4 years. I did not draw it and now have 3 points.

Head south to the Wyoming border and knock on doors when you spot animals. Most ranchers hate them and will let people hunt them, loads of them on the Montana side of Sheridan.

Fully agree! Never had someone tell me no when asking permission to hunt Antelope over there. Don't be afraid to ask, just be polite and you'll do just fine.

Good info guys thank you. Was hoping not to drive all the way to the south boarder of the state but I may have to. I just wish I could lock in some land now that I know I can hunt once I get there. But sounds like BMA or knock on doors once I'm there.
