What will this buck do now?
« on: September 16, 2016, 05:59:27 PM »
Hello expert deer hunters...

Found this guy from across the valley during the first day of the high hunt. We'd gone in a bit early...  He was relaxed and feeding to bed at about 930am. So off we went and 9 hours later we were coyoted out within 800 yards of where he went to bed on an opposing ridge. While we were waiting for the sun to go down so that we wouldn't be illuminated, a group of 3 hunters appeared in the basin below. Needless to say, he did not show that evening.  The next morning we glassed the area all morning until one of the hunters took of up the hill underneath where the buck had bedded the day before on an EPIC blueberry picking mission so we left...  I'm wondering what some of you think the buck would have done in that situation.  Did he just hunker down to wait it out or did he leave the country?  Will he be back?  Should I head back later in September or wait for the general season. Thoughts?  The picture is from a long ways away. 9 hours away in fact, and he's got his head down climbing the hill away from me. Thanks for your input!!

I really can't tell anything by the picture. But if Its huge buck. Go back and hunt him asap. Most bucks dont completely leave the country. The may use the terrain or cover differently. . Some times they will stop coming out in the daylight. My advice is if he's big go back and hunt him. If he's just a good buck I would not commit to just that area :twocents:.

Sorry about the picture...  It's kinda hard to tell but he's right in the middle. That's through my spotter then zoomed in on the phone. He's walking up and away from the photo. He's just to the right of the green bush. Kind of looks like a light grey crab with its claws up!

If he saw people or got wind of something he didn't like he probably went nocturnal. May not see him again.

Thanks for all the input!  Teanawayslayer, do you think he will stay nocturnal until the end off the September season or well into the general rifle season in October?  I was hoping he'd relax after some time goes by after these hunters leave the basin, but maybe that's too optimistic?

its hard to tell. With this full moon he is going to be nocturnal anyways. Old smart bucks didn't get big by being dumb.
