I have read and seen (on DVD) that other coyote hunters will do this.  At some interval, they would stop their vehicle, let out some howls (perhaps from an e-caller) and listen for replies. Then hunt only those areas where a response was heard.

Has anyone up here tried this, with or without success? I feel lucky enough to find a few places where stands might be productive (topographically, cover, etc).  I'll just make a stand; but calling from the road? I don't find miles of territory to survey this way.  You?

Ivar

I will do that occasionally with the siren. No response and I move on.

You guys are gonna think I'm a real redneck when you find out that I have a one of those Radio Shack home made E-callers riggged up to my truck. The megaphone is in my grill and then I ran wires through my firewall and have the amp fastened under the dash and the MP3 player right at my fingertips.  I aint lying when I tell people that varmint just come running to my truck  :chuckle:

I have always wondered about this.  I am new to predator calling but almost all the videos I have watched the coyotes rarely answer but came running anyways.  Are you guys sure you are not passing up tons of coyotes just waiting for for the few that respond?

Whats even funnier is a dying rabbit at a red light. Man people start looking around.

That's tv. Not real life.  :chuckle:
You have to remember that most videos are filmed in coyote rich areas or private ranches.

I'll do it in the evening, night, and early morning hours when I am in a new area and have a chance to scout prior to hunting.  It helps narrow down the areas that may or may not hold coyotes.  If you do it during those hours than you have a great chance of getting an answer back.  I will not do this if I am hunting or in areas I know contain coyotes already.  You may get one running in on you when you are not ready to hunt.
