Anyone hunted 448?
«
on:
September 18, 2016, 09:47:51 AM »
I have a buddy who recently bought a house that butts up to BLM land in 448.
I've always hunted the Methow but not having to drive 5 hours and hunt with 5000 other hunters is appealing.
Only problem is he says he hasn't seen any bucks. Just a few does.
Anyone had luck in this GMU? Or should I just head east again?
Thanks!

Lots of deer in 448! Tough to find but they're there. Very thick terrain. Lots of high country stuff where they seem to like to live also. They're around though.

He (or you) probably won't see many bucks roaming around during the day in the open. Not until rut, anyhow. I have quite a few around my place, see the does and fawns all year long, but only see bucks during rut, and I do see them! They are there. You just have to find where they spend most of their time and get up close and personal.
Blacktail hunting is very different than muley hunting, more like whitetail hunting in the thick stuff.

I hunt the 448 primarily but no luck at all. Mostly lower elevations. I see bucks on my cameras but never in front of my bow where it counts lol. Maybe my luck will change tomorrow

Jake, were you scouting or did you take up archery?

Bear hunting always turns into scouting when you see # of bucks like these

Last season I spooked a basket 4pt in 448 at 40yds. The timber and Devils club is so thick where I was and he was laying down behind a big fallen piece of timber, when he stood I had no bow shot because of the log. By spooking him a spike at 20yds stood up and he too was protected by logs. They are there, in that thick timber slow down, move deliberately and then wait, then move. For us there was no real runs or signs and I was bow hunting the late season. The blacktails there are like ghosts.

I went up scouting this past weekend and all I saw were does. Not saying there are bucks but they're hard to find.

If you need to ask, then go east. Doesn't sound to me like you want to hunt blacktails. It's late September and you still haven't seen the area that's close to home.
Or do like a lot of people, and hunt blacktails closer to home after your Eastside area closes.

Your buddy should check the status of that neighboring land. There is only one BLM parcel in the 448 and it is surrounded by other public lands. There is only like a thousand acres of BLM land in western WA outside of the San Juans.
Wouldn't want to hunt the land only to find out it's county, tribal, etc.
