Idaho, Unit 6
« on: September 19, 2016, 04:34:09 PM »
I have been asked on short notice by a close friend to help him and his old man on their last Elk hunting adventure together, of course I agreed ( So I bought deer, elk, wolf tags). So they have chosen Unit 6, based only on geographical location. I will only get the weekend before opening day to do any scouting (Yeah yeah I know). So I have a few questions for anyone that cares to answer! 1. Are there enough access points to get in fairly deep with a vehicle ( yes I google earthed it, mapped FS roads), the old guy can maybe do a mile or two in moderate terrain. 2. Anyone have any luck there, pics, helpful info?  Feel free to flame me if needed. Thanks in advance.....

All of the places that I have elk hunted in Unit 6 were straight up, straight down and thick.    I only bought a tag one year, could have shot several nice 6 pt bulls but the effort to get them out always exceeded the benefit.

Good luck!

Yeah I just got back from Unit 6.  steep and deep.  be in shape and ready to dive the brush.  Elk got super quiet last week and skunked me out.  But they were starting to sing again Sunday morning, along with the wolves.  LOTS of bulls in there, just need them talking so you can zero in on them, they seemed to be cowing up before they went quiet so calling works.  Not gonna find them if they are quiet based on what I saw.

Unit 6 has lots of different types of terrain. The north side of the st. joe is pretty steep and thick with only roads being down low. It does have some single track trails up high but not much access. The south side of the joe looks like the moon from all the clearcuts. There are tons of roads that side. Most are gated but have a 4 wheeler access. I bear hunted quite a bit this spring down there and saw lots of elk early summer but have not seen much later into fall. Take a look at the upper end of fishhook creek where units 6,7 and 9 come together. This area is intermixed state land and timber land with lots of gated roads. It is also fairly flat and doesn't seem to get as much pressure. It is pretty high elevation and you could see some weather so be prepared. I have been snowed on in early September in that area.

Was thinking about taking my son over in that area around Thanksgiving for whitetail hunting. Any feedback on the deer hunting would be appreciated.

unit 6 is steep! Don't discard units next to it.
