GMU 117,124
« on: September 20, 2016, 06:43:30 AM »
GMU 117 or 124. anyone else hunt in that area? Just curious how your luck has been over the years? I hunted that my whole life, but have not gotten a wall hanger yet. Has anyone else? My dad has 3 in the living room, he has hunted there for over 35 years.

We've hunted unit 124 the past 7 years.  We're on agriculture land and generally only see basket bucks.  have only seen 1 truly nice buck in our area over the years.  Lots of deer, but the older bucks are either real smart or get harvested before they get big.

Since I began hunting 124 I have yet to eat tag soup.   I see some pretty good deer (in my opinion anyways) killed out there every year.  I have some friends who own property in the area and they kill 130+ inch deer every year.  My best deer from 124 is the one in my Avatar pic.

I seen a stud of a WT buck on my scouting trip last weekend.  If I don't end up hunting there I would reveal his coordinates if anyone is interested.  Would require in IEP permit.

That's a nice offer, I have said IEP permit if you end up not going there.  I am always interested in exploring new areas of IEP land.

I agree I wish they would keep the 4 point minimum. I understand for youth hunters, fully support the fact of it. but letting the deer grow is a huge advantage! everyone gets to see bigger and better bucks all around! I have luckily tagged out every year. but yes basket rack bucks. . I did get one nice maybe 120-130 inch buck. 6x7 that was in 2003! I've seen bigger bucks just never got a shot off in time! you really got to be on your toes around there!

There are big bucks in 124. My biggest whitetail was harvested in that unit. Scored 148.

I scouted 117 today since I moved over this way and saw no deer sign. I've hunted it on the late hunt a lot and have been successful. Had a pack of 7 wolves walking the skid trail right off the bat this morning...

Are you serious that's insane. . my dad has hunted that GMU for over 35 years and nor him or I have yet to see a single wolf. no sign either. . But that's why I pack a pistol everywhere I go up there!

Never got one on camera but I've seen tracks and heard them in 117.

You didn't see those wolves for the first 25 years you were hunting up there because they weren't there then. It's only been the last 8-10 years that they have been around.
