I saw lots of deer hunters there last year.  Some very large deer camps and almost nearly no deer hanging.  It must be the like winning the lottery.  Some luck persons going to shoot a dandy and everyone from the mountain will drive by that camp to check out the one large buck.  Then everyone comes  back to get a crack at that one big one.  More stories of getting  bucks than every witnessed.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Good luck on Tunk.  Road access from all angles.  Seems like every other year someone kills a stud muley.  Wear plenty of orange.  Know your property boundries if you're hunting lower.  You never know though......... :twocents:

Good luck with that area! You won't find many locals hunting it........... and if they are hunting it you still won't find them.
Will hunt for food.

My dad and I, Dad is 84, have been hunting the Tunk Mt area for four years now, Never saw anything big. Last year we finally found one my dad could shoot. He got a nice little 4X4 muley. A guy from Seattle stopped as we were loading it up and showed us his bigger brother. We never saw much game hanging or running around although we hunted hard, that means no road hunting. We invested some time to learn the area so we kept going back. From what we can gather from locals and other hunters, it used to be a good area, but has gone downhill the last several years. I'll try and figure out how to post a pic from last year. Probably my dads last buck.

That place looks like its all washed up, better find a new spot! :chuckle: :chuckle:

Terrible area...Better hunting on Funk Mountain.. :)

Hey, shhhhhhh.  :chuckle: Actually I killed one on Funk one time with my bow. Way up on the steep side above the road. He rolled all the way to the ditch. Backed my truck up, slid him and and he was haning at Herbs within a few hours!! I miss living up there.

Had pretty bad fire in 2015, see what happens.
My interpretation of the rules are open to interpretation.

Thanks for the input, I knew about the fire, from what I've been hearing, it helped a lot of good feed grow in. The guys we hunt with have done alright the past few years, I haven't been there since '07, my dad's last trip was '09, we are hoping for good fortune this year!

I am going up that way in October..7th through the 10th for bear...will let you all know how the landscape looks..
My cabin is between where the tunk block and north star fires were.
I have hunted from aeneas valley to crawfish lake before the fires.
Haven't been on the forest service roads since they opened them back up this year.
Good luck to all the hunters this year.
Don

An aquaintence of mine popped a nice 6x8 Whitey with G2's that were more than 17" up there two years ago. His dad's private land.  There's some big Bear up there too.
